Players will take to the ice
Mark Tuesday Dec. 7 as the night
that the Ontario Hockey. League
(OHL) Junior "A" Owen Sound
Platers are coming to Lucknow.
The full team roster will hit the ice
at 6:30 p.m. for a 90 minute display
of their drills and skills.
This event is being sponsored by
the Lucknow Minor Hockey As-
sociation (LMHA) as a fundraising
event with all profits going back
into the local minor hockey system.
LMHA executive member Rod
McDonagh said that the Owen
Sound Platers are coming to town
strictly at their own expense. They
are looking at this as a promotional
move in making the South Bruce
and North Huron County areas
aware of their hockey product.
Everyone in attendance will
receive a $2.00 discount coupon for
the Platers home game, on Dec. 12
against the Detroit Jr. Red Wings,
as part of their admission entry.
Prior to the on -ice practice head
coach, Jerry Harrigan, and assistant
coach, Paddy Flynn, will conduct a
coaches clinic in the upstairs room
of the Lucknow Sports omplex.
This will be open to cores at all
levels from the Lucknow and sur-
rounding area hockey systems.
Harrigan, who is ' entering his
second season with the Platers,
coached the Junior "B"- Waterloo
Siskins to four. OHA Champion-
ships and has both coached and
played in Switzerland for many
seasons. Nova Scotia native, Flynn,
played hockey in the Quebec Major
Junior League and specializes in
coaching the Platers goalies and
defencemen. No advance
registration is required for this half
hour seminar.
Part of the Platers' coaching staff
problems is how to juggle the two
Number 1 goaltenders on the team.
Kevin Weekes, who was recently
featured on a CBC Fifth Estate
program, was drafted in the second

round of the June 1993 NHL entry
:draft by the Florida Panthers. He
was taken 41st overall and returned
to the Platers for more seasoning.
As good as he is, however,
Weekes' goaltending partner, Jamie
Storr, has been even more outstan-
ding. The 17 -year-old Storr, a third
year OHL veteran, currently leads
the league in goals against average
(2.68). Kincardine's Jordan Willis
of the London Knights holds down
2nd place (3.22). Storr, who has
played on two world championship
teams in the past two years, will be
eligible for the 1994 NHL entry
draft and is expected to go in the
first round.
The defence, with the recent
injuries to Mark Vilneff and the
trading of Jeff Smith, has an
average age of 17 years and should
improve as the year progresses. Joe
Harris, who was obtained in a Sep-
tember trade with the _Detroit Jr.
Red Wings Leads the Platers'
defence in scoring. A lot of the
attention is centered around Shane
Kenny, drafted from the Fredericton
New Brunswick Midgets. Sixteen -
year -old Kenny, who stands 6'3"
and weighs 217. lbs. was taken as
the Platers' first round selection in
the 1993 OHL draft.
Up front the Platers are blessed
with an array of scoring power with
six players currently averaging
better than a point a game. These
shooters are led by right winger,
Jason MacDonald, who is currently
in the OHL top 10 scorers. It also
includes Jim Brown newly acquired
Rod Hinks, Marion Kacir, Wayne
Primeau and .team captain Jeff
Kostuch.
Some of the above stars will
remain on the ice after their prac-
tice for a shootout exhibition with
local talent. Each of the 12 teams in

has been tasked to provide one
player while a goalie (6) has been
chosen at each level as well. They
will have an opportunity to test
their skills against these future NHL
players. See the advertisemerfriir`

During this time, the remainder of
the Platers team will be available
for autographs. McDonagh also
advises there will be a raffle held
that night with first prize being an
Owen Sound Plater team jersey.
The Platers have donated an
autographed team stick for second
prize and third prize will be a stick
autographed by captain Jeff Kos-
tuch. Tickets will be available that
night. Gerald Murray, of the LMHA
Executive, is arranging for a
Montgomery Bus to go up to the
Owen Sound home game on Sun-
day, Dec. 12.
As much an oddity as this is for a
small town, this is not the first time
that Lucknow -has hosted a Junior
"A" hockey team. The Paul
Henderson led Hamilton Red Wings
played an exhibition game against
the Goderich Junior "B" Siftos in
the Lucknow arena in the .early
1960s. At that . time both teams
were owned by the NHL Detroit
Red Wings who later brought
Henderson and Pit Martin, amongst
others, up to star on the parent
team.

Pirate admiral

withstood an attack by Sir Francis
Drake. Easton and his New-
foundland pirates made off with
stockpiles of gold and returned with
a Spanish ship filled with treasure.
Basques had captured his fort in
his absence, and the triumphant
return ended in at battle on land
and sea. Forty-seven men died
regaining Easton's fort and they are
buried at nearby Bear's Cove, in a
place still known as "the Pirates
Graveyard."
Although he was an outlaw in
England, Easton applied to King
James for a pardon, and apparently
paid well for it. In fact, he received
two pardons.
En route to his retirement, Easton
paused to intercept the Spanish
plate fleet which was transporting
the annual loot of the empire from
Central America.
When he finally settled down in a
palace on the Riviera, Easton was
one of the richest men in the world.
He became a marquis, and lived in
the lap of luxury.
Although Easton never returned to
Newfoundland, his fishermen
pirates did and the Easton name
remains popular in that part of
Newfoundland where pirates once
reigned.
