These students are burying their noses in Canadian books
by Donna Fielder
and Mike Van Niekerk
People are -putting their noses into
some Canadian books. C.B.W.
(Canadian Book Week) has••started.
At Brookside it will run from Nov.
8 to Nov. 26. A bulletin board
outside the library is disappearing
fast, under a mountain of 'fie
leaves with book titles on the one
for each book we've read. We ate
now over 150 books. It is not a
contest, the whole school is in on it.
We think that we will beat the 200
books guessed by Mrs. Clarke, our
librarian.
Rooms 1 and 5 are using
monsters and dragons as their
theme in language. They're reading
books, writing stories, and they've
made some great creations of
monsters out of plasticine,
styrofoam, toothpicks, and pipe
cleaners.
The seniors have kicked off the
indoor sports season with the boys
and girls competing against each
other in senior volleyball. The
teams are pretty evenly matched but
rumor has it that the senior boys
might be just a little bit ahead of
the girls (That is, of course, a boys'
rumor...).
One of the clubs going on right at
the moment is the Seeds Commit-
tee. They are trying to help Brook -

side reach the Green Banner which
happens when we complete 100
environmental projects. At the
moment we have completed 70; 30
more points to go. Keep up the
good work.
As a part of the Grade 7 Indian
Unit, students had a Celebration
Potlatch. This was after research,
reports, and projects, and was held
on Nov. 5. There were four dif-
ferent centres. At the "Entrance to
the Stockade" they made faces for

totem poles. In the "Forest of Many
Readings", Melissa Lynn Dozois
led Indian games, helped by Kathy
Leeman. Cathy Moir led a bannock-
making centre in the "Seminar
Room. Longhouse", and in the "9th
Wigwam" they made corn neck-
laces. They ended the Potlatch with
a feast of moose meat, wild rice
soup, apple cake, corn bread, rice
pudding and some chocolate treats.
Linda Culbert helped by sup-
plying the needles and thread for
the corn necklaces. Thanks
everybody. The Grade 7s liked the
activities and the food. There are
totem poles on display in the
library, in Mrs. Dozois' and Mrs.
Tebbutt's classrooms, and there is
• one in the office. They are really
good and the Grade 7s put a lot of
work into them.
