Veteran asks: remember,
they gave all they had
To the editor:
Remembrance Day will soon be
with us again and veterans all
across Canada will be marching to
the Cenotaphs. Many of these
veterans are also marching down
the last half of life's hard trail and
eventually into oblivion.
At the eleventh hour on the
eleventh day of the eleventh month
1993, they will honor their com-
rades who paid the supreme
sacrifice, died and will forever lie
in their gravbs on foreign soil. If
they could be with us would they
not see more glory at the dawn of
day and more beauty at the setting
of the sun.
As we honor them, let us remem-
ber that they gave all. they had and
all they ever hoped to own so that

we and future generations might
enjoy the freedom of our
democracy. Veterans of all forces
were the pride of their commanders
when hostilities ceased and they
returned home.
*When the history of earth's wars
has been lost forever in the caverns
of time, I sincerely hope our Eter-
nal Commander will be pleastd that
He did welcome ow- veterans into
His Heavenly House.
Sincerely,

Cartier named river
in honor of a saint
•from page 4
Although he had not found gold
or riches, the King agreed to a
second expedition the following
year.
Three ships left Saint Malo the
following spring and Donnacona's
sons ably guided Cartier past An-
ticosti Island and up a broad river.
On August 10, 1535, Cartier named
the mighty river the St. Lawrence •
in honor of the saint whose feast
day it was.
. Cartier proceeded up the river
until his ships reached a great fist
of rock where he found the set-
tlement of Stadacona, which
became the site of Quebec City.
At this point there is historic
conjecture that Cartier was advised
by his interpreters that the set-
tlement at Stadacona was "kanata",
the Iroquois word for "village" or
"community". The phrase
"Kingdom of Canada" appeared in
Cartier's journal on August 8, 1535.
Subsequently, the name "Canada"
appeared on the 1547 "Harleian"
world map which displayed the
discoveries made during Cartier's
second voyage.
Of course, there are other
explanations for "Canada". Some
have contended that Spanish
ekplorers had sought gold around
the Baie des Chaleurs. Finding
none, they explained to the natives:
"acanada" which means "nothing
here," and these words were sup-
posedly repeated to Cartier.
Alternately, the Kingston Gazette
of 1811 reported an even more
fanciful proportion for the naming
of Canada.
The newspaper reported that name
may have been derived from settlers
in New France who were allowed
only one can of spruce beer each
day and "every moment articulated
'can a day'"

How the poppy became a symbol
To the editor
As Nov. 11 approaches,
Canadians all across the country
will once again be wearing the red
and green of the poppy. 1 thought
your readers might like to know
how the poppy became a symbol of
remembrance, and the dual purpose
it serves today.
During WW1 (1914 - 1918) much
of the fighting occurred in France
and Belgium where poppies
bloomed in abundance over the
battlefields and the graves of those
who gave the supreme sacrifice.
Most Canadians have heard the
story of Lt. - Col. John McCrae of
Guelph, Ont. and the timeless poem
written by him. "In Flanders Fields"
inspired not only Canada, but also
the United States, to adopt the
poppy as a symbol of remembrance.
In Canada, the Great War Veterans
Association officially adopted it' in
1921. It has remained so, and has
made an annual appearance as such,
since 1926.
The demand for the poppies was
so great after the fighting stopped
on Nov. 11, 1918 that real flowers
could not be used. Wounded sol-
diers, who were unable to work at
other jobs began making cloth
poppies to satisfy the demand. The
poppies were to be worn for a
period beginning the first of
November to the "eleventh hour of
the eleventh day of the eleventh
month".
Today, the plastic poppies we use
are made exclusively by Vetcraft
Industries and is a copyright of the
Royal Canadian Legion. Vetcraft

agreement was defeated. The
agreement was subsequently
rejected by council due to the wor-
ding of item 6 (c) which could
cause a meeting to . be invalid
should all municipalities not be
represented.
Ross and Lois Durnin voiced their
concerns about the status of an
agreement regarding the unopened
road allowance at Lots 15/16, Con-
cession 8, and the disregard of the
terms by some parties to the
agreement in removing a portion of
fence before the agreement was
signed.
Harold Glenn will be. advised that
the agreement between himself, the
township, the .Durnins and Ronald
MacCrostie, for use of the
unopened road allowance at that
property designation, must be
signed by Nov. 10, if he wishes to
use it as a right-of-way.
