Parents learn about STAR program at LOPS
Wed., Oct. 27 was a special
evening set aside as an infor-
mational meeting for parents to
learn how the STAR program is
working at 1,C'PS. The excellent
turn out indicated that parents are

Ms. Broad explained why the

a program and how successful It
has been. Special guest, Sharon
Creighton, Public Health Nurse
demonstrated the need for co-
operation of each member in the
family. Marg Hendershot, Guidance
Department of The Bruce County
Board of Education drew attention
to positive body language, being a
good listener and the importance of
communication. Constable Andy
Burgess also emphasized the impor-
tance of communication. He felt
STAR was an excellent tool for
parents and children, especially
teenagers to use. Richard Bryant,

ticipation Lodge, brought almost
S12,000. The highest sold for $750.
Una Matthews gave a report from
the Bruce County rally which she
and three others had attended in
Paisley, on Oct. 21. •Brita Ball, from
Walkerton, was one of the speakers
and she showed slides from her
visit to Zambia, where she spent
some months trying 'to teach the
women how to preserve vegetables
and fruit. .
Margaret •Mowbray • gave the
motto - cheerful living makes a

they had done.
The electives were set up to ap-
peal to a variety of interests. They
included singing, first aid, struc-
tures, co-operative book making,
construction, folk painting, horse
care, cake decorating, line dancing,
photography, archery and cookie
making.
The staff and students would like
to thank their guest presenters:
Catherine Stevens, Reg O'Hagan,
Del Burkhart, Crystal Elliott, Mer-
lene Bergman, Lynn Grist, Mary
Kay Clooney, Irene Dickie, Al
Pogsun, Dave Enright, John Mayer,

Directors Muriel MacKenzie and
Mary Lavis served lunch assisted
by Ruth Langen and a social time

Professional Deselopment Day
Our country -wide Professional
Development Day was held in Pon
Elgin on Fri., .Oct. 22. Mrs. Ellis
was a member of the organizing
committee for this very fine day
entitled "Touching the Future". In
the morning, Rod Peturson, a
Science and Technology consultant
with the Windsor Board of
Education, spoke to all of the
elementary teachers about preparing
students tor the year -2000

In the afternoon, teachers attended
workshops to many subject areas,
Mrs. Maclntyre, Mrs. Black, Mrs.
Mayer, Miss Scott. Mrs. Ellis and
Ms. Broad presented a workshop
about our STARpower program to
a group of interested teachers. They
were impressed by the school's
commitment' and effectiveness in
helping student, to problem solve

Masena and Suan Guay. The electives provide opportunities to use cooperation and STARpower
skills in a positive setting. They could also provide an introduction to life long hobbies and skills.
