REMEMBERING -
One frosty November day an elderly man walked
through a cemetery. His face was blank as if he didn't
know what was going on around him. He didn't even
notice the autumn leaves crunching beneath his
shoes, the dark grey clouds moving in, or the geese
flying overhead. He stopped at a grave, put his hand
in his pocket and brought out a poppy. A tear slowly
rolled down his cheek; in that one tear was horrid
memory of his good buddy being hit by enemy gun
fire and falling over in a muddy trench. Krfowing that
his buddy may never get up again, he ran to him
hoping that he was still alive. When he reached his
buddy, he didn't move. The old man started calling,
"Timothy! Timothy"! Please don't die on me."
Suddenly the old man realized that he was calling out
his good friend's name in the frosty air of the
lonesome cemetery. -
A young girl, walking by on her way home from
school, heard the elderly man talking to himself in a
low voice, "I must be brave and strong, just like my
good friend Timothy was, God bless him..." The girl
stopped and thought about how much luckier she
was than those who had lived through the war.
When she got home she took her allowance and
bought poppies for her parents, her brother and
herself to wear as a symbol of remembrance for those
who had fought, suffered and lost loved ones in war,
so that she and her family could live a better life in a
country strong and free.
