The Lucknow Sentinel, 1993-10-27, Page 15Mrs. Young loves Brookside's new wing
by Donna Fielder
and Mike Van Niekerk
We would like to continue
introducing you to our staff mem-
bers. We have a returning teacher
this year, Heather Young. She has
been teaching for 12 years. Mrs.
Young is teaching the 2/3 class in
the morning. She says it's different
than teaching 1/2. She also says it's
challenging getting back into
routine. Mrs. Young would like to
teach until she retires. $he loves the
new wing with all the big windows.
She has two children. One, the
"baby," is in Kindergarten, and her
other daughter is in grade. four.
The school year is in full swing at
Brookside. As part of a government
unit, one group is exploring expres-
sing opinions logically and listening
to the opinions of others by having
classroom debates. Mr. Culp's
Grade 4/5 is debating about whether
helmets on bicycles should be man-
datory or not, whether "clean
hands" inspection should be man-
datory or not as well, and whether
they should keep snack day or not.
. Keep it up!
In the multi-age room, Grades
2/3/4, things are really cooking up
with the potato unit. Just recently
they had a giant feast of potatoes!
They were studying the history of
potatoes and where they grow. They
found out that Henry Ford used
potatoes for fuel in his first car, and
what can be made from potatoes,
such as potato chips and french
fries. They learned what's inside a
potato, how to make potato prints,
and that potatoes make good stain
removers. They also made a Mr.
and Mrs. Potato Head.
B ROOKSIDE. BROADCAST
Room 101 kicked off their potato
theme by attending the potato feast.
It's their turn now to learn amazing
potato facts! The multi-age class is
now working on an owl unit. They
have a great horned owl in their
room, they're making cylinder owls
and pretzel owls, and they are
studying the special features of
them. Grade 4 students are learning
how to make point form notes and
how to use research materials
making Owl booklets in the
Library.
• A group of Grade one students
from Mrs. Hodsman's and Miss
Roberts' classes have written to a
famous author, Robert Munsch
author of Murmel, Murmel, Mur -
mel; Mud Puddle; Angela's
Airplane; 50 Below Zero; I Have to
go!; and many other favorites. This
group, called the "Munschies" also
made a gigantic chart comparing
Munsch books. As their author
study finished, they celebrated by
sharing their work and a film about
Robert •Munsch with their classes.
As you might expect, a group called
the "Munschies" . would have to
have a "munch" - and so they did,
with cookies for the finishing
touch!
Welcome to the longhouse! Grade.
7s are doing research on an Indian
Tribe of their choice. Some of the
tribes are Mic Mac, Oneida, and
Seneca. By pretending to be Status
Indians of their tribe, they are

researching transportation, clothes,
food and culture, and then deciding
what kind of education they would
like for their tribe's children,
traditional or modern.
The unit also included a trip to
the London Indian Museum (exce-
llent, recommended!) and having
each student make . an Indian
"creation" to go with his/her tribe.
There is a great display of Indian
crafts and. creations in the Library.
If you would like to come and see
it, you are welcome!, The unit will
end with a "Potlatch" (Indian. feast
and gathering) and Indian centre
day on Nov. 5.
Food is also on the agenda of the
Grade 5/6 students in Room 4
where students are learning about
nutrition and about a variety of
foods, tasting as they go! Wonder-
ful history kits called "Jackdaws"
are being created by grade eight
students following Loyalist research
- including maps, letters, want ads,
newspapers, even a. letter with a
wax seal on it! We're impressed
with their creative ideas! .
