Candidates speak out in Wingharn
by Tim Cumming
Should government be putting
money into.. short-term make-work
projects or simply reduce spending
and expect the private sector to
create jobs?
Six candidates for election in the
riding of Huron -Bruce debated this
question last week in Wingham, as
well as questions of deficit reduc-
tion, taxes (including the Goods and
Services tax), day care, health care
and new drug patent legislation and
how to prevent violence against
women.
More than 100 people attended
the all -candidates meeting, which
was held at F. E. Madill Secondary
School in Wingham. Rick
Alexander, candidate for the Natural
Law Party, did not take part.
Questions from the public at the
meeting included one woman who
asked the candidates about the
recommendations of a recent report
on violence against women. She
later lamented that the government
had paid millions for this study and
yet six candidates appeared totally
unaware of its content.
One questioner commented that,
"I have a pension' plan but it
doesn't seem to be quite as gener-
ous as what the MP's have."
Another question was how the
candidates would ensure the con-
tinuation of medicare.
Press reporters at the meeting
asked about day care, drug patent
legislation, support for bringing big
industry to Huron -Bruce and the
prospect of a minority government.
Here is a short synopsis of some
of the positions taken by the six
candidates at the meeting (where
there is no comment listed on a
particular issue this isn't to imply
that the candidate didn't take a
stand):
Murray Cardiff,
Progressive Conservatives
KEY WORD
Experience.(Cardiff has served
almost 14 years as M.P. for Huron -
Bruce).
EMPHASIS
The small business sector must be
the creator of jobs. The unemployed
need to be given the skills for
employment, not short-term, makfe-
work jobs.
ATTACK ON •
Attack on critics of drug patent
legislation extending patent rights
for large drug manufacturers.
"Patent legislation has made it.
possible for an industry to develop
in Canada that we didn't have."
VIOLENCE AGAINST
WOMEN •
"We have passed anti -stalking
legislation as another tool we can
use (to prevent violence .against
women)."
DAY CARE FUNDING
"It. is the role of government to
help where necessary in the private
system...some businesses are• al-
ready putting in day care."
MINORITY GOVERNMENT
IN 'CANADA
In the case of minority govern-
ment politicians would have to put
the country ahead of partisan inter-
ests, said Cardiff.
"If that were the case it would
test all politicians, I would hope we
wouldput the country first."
JUSTICE REFORM
"The penalty has to match the
severity of the crime."
DEFICIT REDUCTION
The Goods and Services Tax has
brought in about $15.5 billion for
deficit reduction, said Cardiff."
MP PENSIONS
"I think it needs to be studied
independent of Parliament...you can
collect after six years, that is
wrong." Cardiff said Prime Minister
Kim Campbell has already agreed
to change the rules to make only
members 55 years or over eligible.
MEDICARE
Cardiff wants to see a transaction
record given to patients so they see
the cost of their hospital visit.
JOB CREATION
"We're not interested in
something that would be three or
four months work...I still believe if
we give the private sector room to
manoeuvre they will create. work."
DRUG PATENT LAW ,
"Generic drugs have risen more
rapidly (in price) than those in the
patent legislation..."
QUOTABLE
"Thirty per cent of our young
people are leaving high school
before completing the full course,"
said Cardiff, speaking on the need
to train young people for the job
market.

stresses freedom from state inter-
ference).
EMPHASIS
No one should be forced to join
any political, religious or marketing
group.
ATTACK ON
Liberal candidate Paul Steckle's
comments that a Liberal
government would create jobs using
federal, provincial and municipal
funds.
"I don't agree with Mr. Steckle's
comments, the province doesn't
It's' the
have any money...we can't tolerate
that sort of thing any longer nas
taxpayers."
VIOLENCE AGAINST
WOMEN
"Libertarians will not tolerate
violence against anyone in society,
(women or men)."
DAY CARE FUNDING
"The Libertarian Party doesn't
have a red cent for day
care...doubling the day care spots
would still not make day care ac-
cessible."
MINORITY GOVERNMENT
IN CANADA •
"I hope we have a minority
government...we have seen the
results of majority governments in
the past, it has not been good."
JUSTICE REFORM
"We do not build a strong society
by allowing (crime)." He calls the
Young Offenders Act 'the Young

FREE TRADE
"Libertarians are free traders, we
cannot stand alone, we must allow
the world access to our markets...as
individuals you have the 'right to
buy exclusively Canadian."
DEFICIT REDUCTION
"Government is way too big...the
government that robs Peter to pay
Paul will get the support of Paul."
MP PENSIONS
"The idea I would be compelled
to buy a pension plan through
government I find repulsive."
MEDICARE
"We will make sure health care is
accessible."
JOB CREATION
Less government means more
jobs, said Dettweiler. "Long-term
jobs are best created by the private
sector...we're not here to steal more
money from you to get into that
business (of job creation)."
DRUG PATENT LAW
"We will not become involved in
the business of private companies."
QUOTABLE
"It is our high taxation today that
forces both the husband and wife to
the job market."
Len Lobb,
Reform Party
KEY WORD

EMPHASIS
Belief that government is too big,
the people have too little expen-
dable income after taxes.
ATTACK ON

job . creation program, involving
governments sharing costs.
"It sounds to me like taxation .
from ,three levels."
VIOLENCE AGAINST
WOMEN
Lobb says there should be priority
of victims' rights over "criminals'
rights."
