Missionaries are guests at Presbytery
Missionaries Laurie and Ted Van
Den Hurk were guests at the' Sep-
. tember meeting of the Bruce Pres-
bytery held at Lions Head.
With the help of some Presbytery
members they portrayed the lives of
people from Tanzania through "le-
tters to God". Each one showed
how the Spirit filled the people with
power, love and self control, that
they may recognize the joy of life
in the church and have respect for
all.
Each vignette indicated special
thanks to God for their abundance,
even in the midst of problems.
The Van Den Hurks noted that
even though the churches are ex-
periencing problems, there'are still
many good things happening in the
church today.
The Van Den Hurks spent six
years working with the people of
Tanzania in the area of community
development, and they look forward
to returning there in the near future.
They encourage everyone to con-
tinue supporting this special
ministry through M & S givings, as
"all are called to be Jesus to one
another."
The Bruce Presbytery Retreat Day
is planned for Monday, Oct. 25,
beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Arthur
United Church. The theme is
Caring About Leadership and styles
of leadership within the community
of faith will be explored.
Glen Elliott, finance chairperson,
outlined the history and purpose of
tate proposed Hamilton Conference
Growth Fund, an opportunity to
invest "in ourself through a capital
pool." This fund encourages local
congregations and individuals to
invest monies that would then be
made available for use within the
church. The Presbyteries would
appoint four representatives to the
board, one of whom would be on
the executive. Mr. Elliott would be
willing to attend the local church
board meetings to further explain
the proposed system.

County school
enrolment about
the same as '92
Unofficial figures put enrol-
ment at Bruce County schools
very close to last year's levels.
There were 10,918 students on
the first day of school, 68 more
than expected but 18 fewer than
Sept. 30 of last year.
"It's probably one of the most
accurate years we've had for
projecting (enrolment numbers),"
said director of education Paul
Martindale. "For several months
it looked like it would be the
most chaotic."
Overall, the first day saw 12
fewer elementary students and
80 more secondary students than
predicted.
Do you know a
Good Steward?
The Huron Soil and Crop
Improvement association has es- '
tablished a new award to recognize
fanners who demonstrate good
stewardship practices.
The award, to be called the
"GOOD STEWARD AWARD", is
to recognize Huron County farmers
for their strong commitment in their
roles as stewards of the land. How
a farmer manages his entire farm
operation -to protect the environment
and conserve natural resources on
the:farm will be considered.
Some of the farming practices
that will be considered are:
*soil and water" conservation prac-
tices;
*manure storage and handling;
*efficient use of crop inputs such•as
the use of, soil testing and feed
testing;
*the safe handling and storage of
hazardous material ' such as fuel,
fertilizer or pesticides
No single farm practice alone
would provide the basis for
receiving the award, but a whole
farm approach will be considered
for the award.
The Association would like to
stress that the- award is not a com-
petition between farmers, but rather
a recognition of the stewardship
efforts of farmers, and thus more
than one award . may be presented
each year. .
To nominate someone, contact
either Larry Plaetzer, Awards
Chairman (526-7121) or the Ontario
Ministry of Agriculture and Food
Office in Clinton. The deadline for
nominations is October 15. For
further information on the award
contact the OMAF office in Clin-
ton.
Community
makes -the
newspaper
•from page 5
They still understand that people -
and what people do in the local
community - is the stuff that sets
their newspapers apart.
In English Canada, 10,331,000
adults read a community newspaper
every week. Community newspaper
readership has grown by 1,371,000
English adults in the past five
years. .
It's because community weekly
newspapers have remembered what
the old publisher knew so well - to
serve their own communities first;
always and best.
It's why there will never be 'a
final "30" put to the community
weekly newspaper business.
The community newspaper will
survive and prosper because it
serves the community's need.
The community newspaper
publisher will be a hero as long as
the community newspaper answers
that need for people who dwell in
communities.
