Ella Hackett chaired the program following the theme "Pentecost" and opened with a reading "Speaking with Understanding". October is the month the pennies are presented for the Least Coin program. Every month an offering of pennies is gathered, These pen- nies along with the offering from the World's Day of Prayer -are used by women all around the world for worthy causes. . Carolyn Menary read the scrip- ture. Allen Bradley read the meditation on Pentecost, the time when the disciples received the Holy Spirit and the birthday of the church. Evelyn Cook, at the piano and Jean Conley with her harp played several musical numbers. She brought some of the history of the commencement of the Women's Missionary Society in the 1870s. She compared some of the problems encountered by the mem- bers then and now. The commit- ment and education of those pioneer workers is often lacking in our, modern society. Mildred Loree was in charge of the program, opening with • a Thanksgiving poem and prayer. The worship service from the Glad Tidings was followed using the symbols of a cornucopia and the circle. Each member was given three colored circles to write of a time, place and people for which, they were especially thankful. Donalda Moffat and Peggy Henderson played two piano duets, The Gondoliers and Trees, which were enjoyed by everyone. Gladys Roberston introduced the guest speaker and Audrey Mac- Donald thanked her and everyone else that had • contributed towards the program. Following the closing hymn and prayer everyone enjoyed a time of fellowship around the table. the kindnesses all through the year. A letter was received from Evelyn Henderson who is ill and presently with her families in Toronto. - Unitl Eleven members 'met following the joint meeting and answered rollcall with a verse with thanks in it. The birthday. jar was passed for Jean MacLeod and birthday wishes extended. The offering and the Least Coin were received followed with prayer. Shirley Bolt dealt with the donations for the fowl supper. Unit 2 Members met in the church parlor with Allen Bradley presiding. She read "Fill Your Heart With Thanksgiving". Rollcall was a Thanksgiving tradition. The regular business was con- ducted and plans made for the fowl supper. Unit 3 The Thanksgiving meeting of Lucknow United Church Women, Unit 3, .was held Oct. 5 in the church parlor. Wilda Campbell, Merle Elliott and Marlene Struthers, the program committee, conducted the worship with readings , prayer and scripture with„ a Thanksgiving theme. Hymns were accompanied by Laura Lee Cayley. All the ladies participated in group discussion about what each had to be thankful. Mrs. Campbell closed the program with a prayer of thanks. Ann Anderson, unit leader, opened the business portion of the meeting with a reading "Praise For Harvest". Norma Weathcrhead, assistant secretary, read the minutes of the September meeting. Doll call was answered by 20 members with some very interesting and helpful "household hints". Treasurer's report was given and all were reminded to bring their Thankof- fering envelopes to- the November meeting. . Committee reports were given as follows: Kathleen Collyer, Citizen- ship, read, an article on music and math in Christian Education; Alice Ritchie, Stewardship, read "I Am A Percent"; Laura Lee Cayley,, Chris- tian Education, reported 18 girls in CGIT; Bev Thompson, Manse gave a . complete report of manse improvements as in the fall newslet- ter. A list was circulated for workers and food required for the Fowl Supper to be held Oct. 19. Mary Boyle led in the 1993 In - gathering Service "Speaking With Understanding" which dedicated the Fellowship of the Least Coin that had been collected during the year. Kathleen Collyer read scripture and everyone took part in responsive reading, prayer and hymns. The meeting closed with the mizpah benediction. Slide presentation at. WMS meeting in South Kinloss Sharon MacDougall was the hos- tess for the South Kinloss WMS Thankoffering service held at the. church on OCL .6. ' ' Ruth Bell, who acted as president, opened the meeting with a reading; "Lord of the Harvest," followed by prayer. The opening hymn was' sung and Marilyn Maclntyre read the minutes of the last meeting. Doris MacKinnon gave the treasurer's. report. Elizabeth Dickie gave a report on the Fall Rally which was held in Kincardine. The guest speaker had, collected clothing to go to Somalia. She went along to deliver the sup- plies and worked during her stay under UNICEF. Two invitations were received. On Oct. 20 the WMS members have been invited to Kinlough at 2:00 and to Whitechurch at 7:30. Marilynne Gilchrist led the group in a Thankoffering Worship Service based on Ecclesiastes 3. The theme was "God's love, like a circle, has no beginning'and no end." • Marilynne sang a lovely duet with Margaret deBoer. " Marg Burkhart presented the study through the use of slides and a script she had developed. Her beautiful pictures of various local scenes in different seasons really reminded everyone of .all • the wonderful things God has provided for us. Seventeen members answered the roll call with a harvest verse as well as naming a new food they had tried this year; Mary, Lavis gave the courtesy remarks and following the singing of the last hymn she closed the meeting with prayer. Freda Machi- nes will hold the next meeting on Nov. 3.. • - Board of education trustees will change meeting plans There will be' more committee meetings and . fewer regular board meetings for Bruce Board of Education -trustees -this -fall.' A three-month trial will see the board meet on the first Tuesday of the month at 1 p.m. for regular meetings. The third Tuesday normally used for board meetings will be set aside for committee meetings. . Those meetings are now held in the evenings or on the morning of the board meeting, , and often delay the start df the regular session by up to half an hour. . "Committee meetings are open," said - trustee Gord Thompson. "We're not shutting out the public."
