province. "Twenty-two boards don't
have JK," he said. "And some of
the 70 -odd boards that have it want
to drop it," he added.
Thompson, who was at a meeting
of Western Ontario region boards of
education in London last month,
said the timing could be right to get
the province to reverse itspolicy on
mandatory JIB..
"I believe we can get local option
on this," he said. "It's just going
back to the way things were," he
explained later. "Boards have the
choice to offer JK or not."
Meanwhile, the Bruce board is
investigating a switch to all -day
alternate da kindergarten as a way
to save costs.
Thompson said parents in the
south end of the county want .the
change, but he warned that if JK is
implemented those students would
have to follow the same schedule.
Parents and educators will have to
look at the question of having three -
and four -year-olds at school all
day, every -other day---Would-the
savings offset the quality of
education?" Thompson asked.
Public meetings on the kindergar-
ten schedule change will be held
this fall, with a report due in
January.
"Those who have an interest in
the issue should make sure they
have their input in the next five to
six weeks," Thompson said.
25 per cent of money

program but they must meet certain
criteria.
"They have to cover a wide range
of issues. It can't just be the Pork
Board," said Klopp. "They have to
have regional representation. You
need a legal charter; so it's a very
formal process. The criteria that
was generally agreed upon was that
we're going to go on the same lines
as the Ministry of Labor for who
has to join u tions."
He said that some of the MPPs
were concerned 'about ensuring
some of the funding is spent local-
ly. "To make sure that we have
grass roots people involved, 25 per
cent of the money would be the
minimum that would have to be
coming back to the local level."
Klopp said he voted in favor of
the act. "It's about giving farm
organizations the stability so that
they can work on all the issues," he
said, but added, "It will only be as
good as the farmers want it to be.
"I am forcing you to join but I'm
giving you the option to get your
money back."
