It was complete with food, games, thrills, and ambassadors. The ambassadors were from the Perth County Board of Education, the Huron -Perth Roman Catholic Separate School Board, the City of Stratford, and the provincial gov- ernment who were all on hand to officially open the $15 million facility. Students have been study- ing in the complex since the begin- ning of September. The complex is a shared facility between the two boards and the city. It gives the separate board a new St. Michael Catholic Secondary school which will hold all of its students; the Perth board an addi- tion at Stratford Northwester Sec- ondary School eliminating portables; and both boards have use of the new library. The City of Stratford lhas on the site new recre- ation 'facilitieswhich can be used by the schools. The' thrills of the day began with the skydivers landing on the site to open .the ceremonies and ended with release of a flock of pigeons as a'symbol of peace. • In between, applause and shrieks of school spirit from St. Michael Catholic Secondary School and Stratford Northwestern Secondary School students interjected during the speeches from Stratford Mayor Dave Hunt; Louise ' Martin, chairperson of the separate school • board; Vern Tozer, chairperson of the Perth board; Perth MPP Karen Haslam; Marion Boyd, attorney general and former education minis- ter who attended the 1991- sod - turning; Mike Farnan, associate minister of education and training; Perth -Wellington -Waterloo MP Harry Brightwell; and Charles Dunphy, president of the Stratford - Perth Family . YMCA board of • .7 directors. Approximately 1,000 students and members of the public crowded around the stage watch the ceremonies. Organizers could not have picked a better day as the weather was warm and sunny for the outdoor • opening. Mayor Hunt said the pro- ject was completed but not without some controversy. However, alder- men could agree on the weather which Hunt said, tongue in cheek, was ordered by council. "Stratford council was always•a 6 to 4. vote on whether it was going to go on being a part of this. Some of [the aldermen] are coming around once they see it," said Hunt. "It's a great day for me. It will be one of those milestones in my life," said Haslam, who described the project as a dream come true through hard work and co-oper- ation. "You are on the cutting edge of what communities can do when they , work together," said Boyd, who SERC chairperson Ted Blowes described as "a friend of SERC." "It takes more than facilities and co-op to solve this problem [lack of jobs]. It takes a great deal of wis- dom. I hope that wisdom will come to fruition here. I hope in the future, we can .match our training with our needs," said Brightwell during his speech. Activities took place all day for the students prior to the opening ceremonies. Mitchell's Dave Cook, of Tailspin Kite, did a stunt kite demonstration for students. Students of both schools assembled to form the word "Together" for an aerial photo.
