The Lucknow Sentinel, 1993-10-06, Page 7You can find your' long lost relatives
Have you ever thought of your
life as a mystery? One's future is
certainly filled with mystery and for
some people, the past is just as
mysterious. Many more people are
hecorning intrigiA with their an-
cestors and the people who came
before them. Most of us .can
probably sa; we at least know who
our grandparents are, or w. re, and
perhaps have heard many stones
about other relatives within our
circle of kin. But how far can we
go into our pasi? Can we name our
grandparents parents'? Where were
they from, how did they live, what
were their lives like?
Each of the relatives who came
before us have played a role in
determining who' we are, what we
look like and may account for some
of those idiosyncrasies that drive
other family members to distrttction.
However, you are the latest chapter,
the newest news, the most recent
edition to a long line of people.
On Oct. 16 from 10 a.m. une'1
3:30 p.rn. at the Bruce County
Museum, members of the Bruce
County Genealogical Society plan
to help you search out those long,
lost relatives with a day long
workshop that will keep you busy,
interested and asking questions.
There will be two sessions. The
first will he held at 10 a.m• to noon
for beginners (but everyone
interested is welcome). You will
learn how to begin the search and
organize the family records that you
uncover.
Following lunch, session two
begins at 1:30 for everyone and for
those who are beyond the, beginners
stage (and this would include all
those beginners of the morning
session). During this session, you
will be introduced to computers and
genealogy and the teehniqucs of
putting your family history on
video.
Cost of the program for a full day
is $1() per person or you may
choose to participate in the half day
program for $5. Interested? For
further information call the Museum
at 797-2080.
Writer shares merits of Thameswood
To the editor
May f use this column to share
the merits of Thameswood Lodge in
London? If my words can alleviate
any fears for, or enlighten any one
who may need to spend time there,
this letter will be worth the space,
Thameswood Lodge is a home
away from home. It was built and
furnished in 1961 by the Ontario
Division of the Canadian Cancer
Society and is operated by the
Ontario Cancer Treatment and
Research Foundation. Its services
are free to any person who is
receiving cancer treatment and lives
more than 40 kilometres from the
city.
In spite of its scary password, the
facility has a vacation -like at-
mosphere, not at all mindful of a
hospital environment. Its staff is a
group of friendly, caring, well -or-
ganized people trained to satisfy
one's every whim, if at all possible.
It' is not easy to become dis-
couraged in the presence of such, a
genuinely optimistic crew.
The pleasant interchange of ideas
and opinions among residents,
spiritually, emotionally and socially
are occasions I will never forget.
Although severity of conditions
vary,, everyone has a common
interest, that can be freely discussed
with mutual affection and without
patronization. •
Thameswood Lodge offers three
delicious and: nutritional' meals
daily, with.a wide variety of menus;
a bedtime snack and a coffee corner
with fresh fruit and cookies always
available. Because sleep is an itn-
portant aspect of the treatment
process, a large bedroom with its .
comfortable beds guarantees restful
nights. If sharing a room with one
other person is a concern, rest as-
sured, a few minutes in the com-
pany of a new room mate will
quickly overcome the anxiety.
One need not enter the lodge
bearing things to "pass the time."
Happy -121" Birthday

TO THE EDITOR
mmimmommimp
That aspect of your stay is duly
satisfied. (My needlework was
grossly neglected!). A craft room
equipped with all kinds of materials
is available and a volunteer comes
weekly to share her expertise.
Games are .plentiful, crokinole,
cribbage, cards, scrabble and other
board games. Puzzles of every sort
are there for the working. A well
stocked library corner invites
readers to borrow its multi -interest
volumes. A pool table is always
busy as are the five televisions
equipped with VCRs with movies
provided. An electric organ and
piano stand begging for players.
One may even curl up in front of
the fireplace and watch the fish
cavorting in the .aquarium.
Should a resident become too lazy
to carry his/her laundry home on
the weekend, a laundry room with
detergent supplied is there to • be
used.
'Support and informational .
meetings are organized regularly as
are Bingos. Participation is • en-
couraged„, but not obligatory.
Compiinientary hair -dressing is also
offered.
Two vans with courteous and
cautious drivers carry each resident
to the Cancer Clinic for treatment.
The route is repeated every half
hour. Once treatment is completed
for the day, a resident is free to
leave the premises.
The folks at Thameswood Lodge
know that cancer can be beaten.
Each one is doing his utmost to
prove it. It has been gratifying to ,
experience first-hand the result of
our donations to the Canadian Can-
cer Society.
I highly commend and respect the
work of our local representatives,
conveners and volunteer . workers
including the drivers.
Any additional help.' can offer to
future residents of Thameswood
Lodge, will, be graciously given. I
am as near as your .telephone.
