to 1900 when one farmer could feed only 12.
Food and beverage processors also make up a large part of
the industry, employing almost 86,000 In 1990, keeping up
with the demand for processed fruits, vegetables, meats,
dairy products and a variety of ready -to -serve foods.
Food distributors and wholesalers are Involved with
packaging, labelling, storage and transportation. Then, there
are the final links - the hotel, restaurant and institutional
sector and of course, the retail outlets. Also significant are
the agricultural Input suppliers, commodity handlers,
research and development areas.

Ode to Lucknow
Editor's note: the following Ode to Lucknow, as composed by Elwin Hall, of Owen Sound, a former Lucknow
resident is reprinted here for your reading enjoyment. Due to the length of it, it will take two weeks to run it in
• its entirety.
by Elwin Hall He had the perfect mate. There was June and Joyce,
I've written Odes to other towns, He left a lot of memories, a faithful pair,
But Lucknow I've Omitted, Of Lucknow District High, And Wendy, Joan and Slim,
I've had requests from Lucknowites, For when he left the village, And Terry Wilson playing lead,
To them I am committed. To the school we said good-bye. I could depend on him.
So here's a verse or two or three,
About your Sepoy town,
Some names and memories
that I have,
Herewith I shall write down.
•
Of Principals I had at school,
I believe there were just four,
In seven years I taught there,
You could hardly ask for more.
For that was then a time of change,
And men were on the move,
And moving to a better job,
Was what each tried to prove.
The first was Brian Howlett,
From Drayton he did come,
A charming wife and spotted dog,
He set the place a hum.
Then Mel Goyette and Eunice,
He set a steady pace,
He never went behind your back,
To tell you to your face.
I remember Noel Mason,
A truly Christian man,
`Twas cancer finally got him,
`Twas part of someone's plan..
He was so full of energy,
He thrived on good clean fun,
I'm sure that where he is to -day
He has them on the run.
And then came Johnnie Allason,
As musician he was great,
With -Mary Ellen by his side,
I spent a year in Wingham,
I found the going rough,
To me 'twas so impersonal,
One year was quite enough.
But having come to Owen Sound
Now I can plainly see,
There was nothing wrong
with Wingham,
It wasn't just for me.
Can you recall the Hi -Tones,
A group of singing boys,
Truly they were characters,
But they made the sweetest noises.
The harmony was not too bad,
The discipline was great,
With Russell, Duck, and
Doug and Don,
I had to keep them straight.
There was Jerry, George
and Wayne and Jack,
I've nearly named them all,
No finer group I ever trained,
In my mind they still stand tall.
And as for Banding in the school,
There's many I remember,
I guess the Andrews top the list,'
They were such faithful members.
I'd like to name a few from Band,
And many I'll leave out,
If you are one I have forgot,
Please do not cry or pout,
With Doug on drums and John
on horn,
And lots on clarinet,
No finer pair in any band,
Than Sharon and Janet,
With Doug and Bill and
Roy and Wayne,
Our band was fine and strong,
A place for building character,
No bandsman e'er did wrong.
Of teachers I could name a few,
Like Johnstone, Gibson, Dennis,
And Doris, we loved her most of all,
The trail, it was a menace.
MacDougall and MacDonald,
Scotch names in Scottish town, '
Ashkanase and Hewitt,
3 love to write them down.
Tenpenny and Mygland,
Kelterbom and Bell,
Connon, Ramautarsingh,
Some don't rhyme so well,
Mcl,eod and Lee and Plumsteel,
And Madame St. Hilaire,
I know I have left out a few,
I hope that they don't care.

Hall's Ode to Lucknow

Hatless crooners reveal hairless heads
Did you happen to catch the
Country Music Awards last week?
If you did, you, along with mil-
lions of others, probably noticed
that some of the hatless crooners,
decked out in their tuxedos,
revealed slightly balding heads.
Not being a real big country music
fan, it didn't make an impression
on me, but remarks from those
watching with me, and conver-
sation the next day led me to
realize it is seldom you see these
performers without their big hats
on. Wonder if that's the reason
they're going bald.
The larger than life ego of Billy
Ray Cyrus was evident again as
he performed in normal attire -
tight blue jeans. Hey, no tux for
this guy, who loves to flaunt what
he thinks is his sexual appeal.
Come on Billy, relax those arms
and quads before you do per-
manent damage!

we now consider the age of the
candidates. Chretien's Liberal co-
hort Frank McKenna was credited
last week with saying that 59 -

not a minus - when it comes to
running the country. Thank you,

Pig lovers in Hamilion can now
keep the Vietnamese pot-bellied
type as a domesticated pet. Those
municipal politicians have come
full circle first Hamiltonians
couldn't, now Hamiltonians can.
As a former farmer in the swine
industry, I can't imagine anyone
wanting to keep any breed of
swine as a pet, but to each their
own.

If you're going to make a mis-
take, make a good One. And that's
just what'an unemployed
Brampton man did recently when
he played the same set of numbers
twice on his 649 selection slip.
Imagine his surprise when he
found out his error ensured him
two-thirds of the $2.6 million
jackpot, rather than one-third.
Have you seen Bell's neat car-
toon promoting 416 and 905 area
codes as the "perfect couple"?
If you call anyone in the 416
area code, be aware the coding
changed effective Oct. 4. Metro
Toronto has been given the 416
code exclusively, while others are
now in the 905 area. A neat little
pamphlet came in last month's
telephone bill explaining the
change.
Another survey! This one by
Stats Canada tells us that one in
three Canadians live under stress.
I wonder, how much did this
survey cost just to tell us
something we Canadians already
know?
