I'm going to try and get the best return for my dollar and protect it, and a country too has got to protect its citizens." One area where he would cut spending is the social end. "You might argue, 'How can you cut social areas such as welfare'? If the government would show leadership there rather than promoting anti- family values, and use that money to promote family values, you.will reduce single-family units and therefore reduce the whole welfare end of 11" It is not only welfare Zekveld zeroes in on. "By cutting expenses in these social program areas, you get a stronger family and therefore a stronger country economically also." Zekveld and his party are not champions of Free Trade or NAF- TA. "Our party advocates fair trade. I think we have to be more patriotic to our owncountry by protecting it and standing firm on that..You have to have free trade but it must be fair trade," he said, referring to the inequality of subsidization situations. The main reason he is running in this election is to "hold this stan- dard (moral) before the people. I guess in that sense, I would hope that the people in general would grasp the meaning and see that it makes sense, and thus change their thinking." Zekveld believes the average Canadian has become in- dividualistic, saying, "That is really damaging to the family. We are not nearly as patriotic as we used to be. We must gain some of that back by caring about others." Zekveld and his wife • Annette have one daughter, Aria. They operate a veal farm in the Clifa ford/Fordwich area. Zekveld has been a member of the CHP since 1986. When they moved here in 1988 he became involved with the local board, and is currently president of the CHP in the Huron -Bruce riding. He worked closely with Toni Clark, the party's candidate in the 1988 election. • *• • MIDNITE MADNESS• • • • SEPT. 30 1 OCT. 1 OCT. 2 THURSDAY NOON TILL MIDNITE Alf- FRIDA Y NOON riu MIDNITE SATURDAY NOON nu 6 PM RO MAD MAD MAD MIDNITE MADNESS PRICES!
