flu shots
In Ontario, the Ministry of Health
provides the influenza vaccine free
of charge to those individuals who
are at risk of sever illness or death
associated with influenza. Groups of
people most at risk include:
1. People over 65 years 9f age;
2. All residents and patient care
staff of nursing homes, homes for
the aged, and chronic . care
facilities/units;
3. Adults and children with chronic
cardiac or pulmonary disorders;
4. Adults and children with chronic
conditions such as diabetes and
other metabolic diseases, cancer,
immunodeficiency (including HIV
infection), immunosuppression
(including transplant .recipients),
renal disease, anaemia, and
hemoglobinopathy.
5. Children and adolescents (six
months - 19 year) treated for long
periods with aspirin (ASA).
Anyone who i"s not in a high risk
group may consult their family
physician about obtaining the
influenza vaccine.
Kids will seal
wishes in chest
Children' from all the elementary -
schools across Huron County will
be sealing their wishes for the
children of tomorrow in a treasure
chest, on Oct. 6. The chest will be
opened on the 100th anniversary of
the Huron County Children's. Aid
Society, on Oct. 7, 2011.
The event will take place at the .
construction site of the new Huron
Children's Aid Society Family
Resource Centre, MacEwan Street,
Goderich, at 11 a.m. It is expected
to last about an hour and will
feature pipers and drummers and a
choral presentation, ' with a light
lunch • provided for the children
following the ceremony.

Annual fall colour tour
planned for October 3
Plan to attend the annual Fall River Trail. During the. hikes staff
Color Tour. at Wawanosh Valley , will provide information on what's

3, from 1 to 4 p.m. This event
offers a terrific opportunity to enjoy
the sights and sounds of the autumn
season. Hosted by the Maitland
Valley Conservation Authority
(MVCA), the tour offers wagon
rides, guided walks, and a taste of
hot apple cider. Admission' is free
and everyone is welcome to attend.
Wawanosh Valley is a large,
scenic conservation area situated
along the Maitland River. The
property contains hardwood forest,
meadow and a small wetland. Used
primarily for conservation education
activities, Wawansoh has an exten-
sive trail system and is also home
to the Wawanosh Nature Centre.
Wagon rides will be available
throughout the afternoon. The rides
offer a good tour of the conser-
vation area, and it's a comfortable,
easy way to enjoy the spectacular
fall colors. MVCA staff will also be
leading guided walks along the
Duck race to raise funds
for -child abuse prevention
happening in the fields and forests
at this time of year. The guided
• walks will cover fairly gentle ter-
rain and children are welcome to
participate. Visitors are also free to
explore the trails at Wawanosh on
their own. Trail 'maps will be
available. in. the nature centre.
Be sure to stop in at the
Wawanosh Nature Centre during.
your visit. MVCA displays will be
on view and a variety of conser-
vation activities for children will be
available. Visitors are invited to
enjoy a cup of hot apple cider (if
possible please bring your own
mug) while they explore the centre.
The " Wawanosh Nature Centre is
wheelchair accessible.
Wawanosh Valley Conservation
Area is located •south of Belgrave
and west of Highway #4 on• Nature
Centre Road (Concession 6-7 of
East Wawanosh Township).

A duck race for the Prevention of
Child Abuse will be hosted by
Benmiller Inn on Oct. 10, at 2:00
p.m. in - Sharpe's Creek. Fifteen
hundred tickets for ducks are now
on sale for $5.00 per duck. Kathy
Nichol, Innkeeper of Benmiller Inn,
said ("This is our first duck race
ever, but we hope to make this an
annual event". • Many .prizes will be offered for
the winning ducks, including
several mini -vacations to some of
Ontario's ' finest Country Inns,
$250.00 cash, a romantic retreat at
