Propose country -cross skiing club
A plan for organized cross-
country skiing, a sport and
recreation for the whole family,
is being proposed by a group of
Lucknowites. •
• Cross-country skiing is one of
the. best winter sports in which
all family members can par-
ticipate. It affords an opportunity
to be out in nature, get Om of
fresh air and get fit at ones own
pace. It combines the best
qualities of sport, opportunities
to interact with others and attain
a high level of exercise. Cross-
countrrskiing is also an affor-
dable sport. A ski package starts
at $100.00 for new equipment
and approximately $50.00 for
good quality used equipment.
Jack Mali (local .soccer en-
thusiast) will donate use of his
.ro.ert • as an initial cross-
country ski cetitrp. The trails will
run from ( 2` kin `, to 10 km (11/4
miles to 61/4 miles) with various
degrees of difficulty. On the
longest trail, an on site trailer
will be made available to skiers
who want to take shelter or have
a lunch break. The trailer is
equipped with a wood stove and
firewood is on site.
Jann Nielsen, of Lucknow, will
assist in trail design and
preparation. With 15 years ex-
perience, Jann will be available
for instruction, selecting of e-
quipment, waxing of skies etc.
Although cross-country skiing
is a very affordable sport, it will
still cost some money to main-
tain trails and the ski hut. A
proposal will be submitted to the
Recreation Board and it is hoped
that they will, grant a request for
a small amount of funds for the
formation of a ski club. The club
will need a volunteer who has a
snowmobile to help groom the
trails (expenses paid). Grooming
will start after first snowfall
occurs and must continue
throughout the ski season:
It is the intention of the ski
club to 'be a non-profit club,
however a small fee may be
necessary depending on what
funds the Recreation Board
make available.
Anybody interested in enjoying
a great outdoor sport or volun-
teering their snowmobile can
contact Jack at 528-5754 or Jann
at 528-3602 for more infor-
mation.
