Get ready to walk your dog
This year, the Lucknow District
Lions, will host a Lucknow Walk-a-
Dog-a-Thon. It is the tenth year for
the Canine Vision national project
of the Lions Foundation of Canada.
The walk-a-dog-a-thon is
scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 3, at 1
p.m. Registration and starting point
is at the Lucknow Community
Centre. Pledge sheets are available
from the Bank of. Montreal, Luck -
now Farm Supply, Grant Chisholm
or John DeBruyn at the Dungannon
Service Centre.
The Lions have a very interesting
10 km walk around the village, with
four check points where refresh-
ments will be provided for both.
dogs and wallcers.
Its costs $6,000 to provide a
visually •unpaired applicant with the
entire service of obtaining' a guide
dog, this includes vaccination for
the dog, harness, leash and equip-
- ment, medial costs for the guide
dog such as x-ray, physical and
neutering, room and board for the
applicant for a 26 day training
period, etc. The aim of the project
is to help serve others that they
may gain mobility, freedom and
greater independence through travel
with a guide dog.
As well as the seeing -eye dogs,
hearing ear dogs are now available
for the hearing impaired. These
dogs assist by alerting their master
when the doorbell or phone rings,
or another example is when••a baby
cries.
He harassed the Germans
•from page 5
Despite the squalid conditions,
Foote organized .social activities,
including an orchestra in which he
played a mean trumpet. He con-
ducted regular church services, and
also used the church to conceal men
who were escaping. Despite threats
to his life, thepadre harassed the
Germans for better treatment for the
men.
John Foote was awarded the
Victoria Cross for his heroism at
Dieppe, as was another brave
Canadian, Vancouver's Colonel
Charles "Cec" Merritt of the South
Saskatchewan Regiment. Of the
thousands who served their valor
and courage was singled out, but
they were not unique.
There were many acts ot heroism
at Dieppe; and many more would
follow, each one deserving of the
everlasting gratitude of all
Canadians.
