Paul said his appreciation for
tartan and the associated cost
-changed once he had seen firsthand
how tartan is made.
A tour of Abbotsford House, the
house of Sir Walter Scott, was a
sensational experience. One of Sir
Walter's ancestors still resides
there.
The band performed at the Fields
of Bannockburn where the Scottish
and English battled in. 1314, and
had a chance to tour the Heritage
Centre.
• The staff at Ballantyne Cashmere
was entertained by the band. Paul
said one sweater they viewed had a
retail price of $1600. He didn't
bring one back for Joan.
A very old property of great
historic significance - Traquair
House - was toured. They also
make their own beer which has a
7.2 ser cent alcohol content. Paul
said the majority of the fields he
saw were of malting crops'used'Tdr
brewing.
The highlight of the trip came
when the band spent a full day at
Lord Elgin's home near Dun-
fermline. Paul said they were
treated like royalty. A special tent
had been set up to entertain them in
and a multi -course meal with wine
was served to them seated at large
tables with white linen covers. Lord
Elgin is a very down to earth man,
Paul said, and he mingled comfor-
tably with the band members.
He issued an open invitation to
the residents of Dunfermline to
come and hear the band's concert.
Lord Elgin pulled a surprise on the
band members when he requested
they play three special pieces. Paul
said some of the band members
quickly rehearsed and were able to
professionally play two of his re-
quests.
During their stay, Lord Elgin was
with the group all but two days.
Other castles visited included
Blair, where. they were welcomed
by the Duke of Athol]; Glamis
Castle, the home of 'the Earl . of
Strathmore and the birthplace of
H.M. The Queen Mother, Edin-
burgh Castle and Holyrood Palace,
the residence of H.M. The Queen,
where the band played in the
forecourt.
Three of the biggest Scottish
Legions - Banchory, Arbroath and
Forfar- - hosted the band and were
treated to a concert.
Paul, a member of Lucknow
Legion Branch 309, was very
interested in the Haig Factory,
which is 'staffed by veterans who
make all kinds of items bearing the
POPPY•
He also got to visit the home of
golf - The St. Andrews Links, but
alas he didn't get to play a round at
$120 for nine holes. •
The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is
an event Paul will long remember.
Performed in the evening under
thousands of lights, the pageantry
was spectacular. One of the bus
drivers, who had never attended the
Tattoo, admonished the group for
wasting time at it, saying it was a
tourist event. His opinion changed
dramatically that evening when he
later vowed he would never miss it
again.
Although away from home for 21
days, Paul had continual reminders
as he came across and visited such
places Glamis Castle, Culross Ab-
bey and Culross Palace. The name
Lucknow was found engraved on a
very old monument erected in
memory of "The 75th Stirlingshire
Regiment that served with the army
which besieged and took the City of
Delhi. It subsequently formed part
of the forces which relieved the
Forts of Alighur and Agra and the
Garrison of Lucknow A.D. 1857-8."
Yes, -Paul has many memories of
a wonderful trip. If any of those
memories should start to fade, he
need only pull out his 20 envelopes
of pictures or his video and they
will. all come rushing back in
glorious color.
If you should be interested in
hearing The Old Elgin Band per-
form, they have the honor, at Lord
Elgin's request, of closing the IPM
next Saturday afternoon.
