Retained calf ownership project Several cow -calf operators have expressed an interest in being able - to retain ownership of their calves to a finished•market weight in order to achieve the maximum benefit from the improved genetics which they have utilized in their breeding programs. It is also an excellent opportunity to compare your breeding.. program with others under the same feed, environment and management conditions. It also gives a cow -calf producer the op- portunity to see the end, product - beef. You need to remember that no tion cycle you are producing beef, not calves• or stockers. Many cow -calf producers might not have the facilities or feed to - adequately finish their own .calves, nor the numbers to justify placing them in a custom feedlot. It has been proposed that a group of cal- ves could be put together and 'placed in a feedlot in the Grey Brucevicinity. Individuals would retain ownership of their calves and pay the associated feed and other costs as worked put in the custom feeding agreement. Individual grades and weights would be ob- tained at slaughter. There • is also some discussion that the group would forward contract a price with a packer approximately 120 days prior to slaughter. At present, steer calves weighing between 500 to 700 lbs. for delivery in late October would be accepted. Bob Carson from Wiarton, who is a field person for several local Farm Management Clubs, has spear- headed this project.
