Set in Ontario's Chinguacousy Township, near Brampton, in 1927, tension runs high in the days leading up to the Orangemen's 12th of July, King Billy Parade. The internal conflict of the McKay family is underscored by the electricity created when two speakers from an expanding, American ftjndamentalist group arrive to talk at the celebration. Storey, who himself comes from a long line of Orangemen, says,"1 chose to set the play during an interesting point in Canada's his- tory. It was a time of much debate - with French on the postage stamp for the first time, and much im- migration. In fact, the KKK sent envoys into Canada to expand their membership, and they saw the Loyal Orange Order, which was established in Canada in 1890, as a logical entry'point." Storey first came to Blyth in 1981 as the playwright -for Country Chorale, where he first met and worked with resident composer John Roby. Since 'then Storey and Roby have collaborated on a num- ber of Blyth hits including Girls in the Gang, in 1987 and The Dream- land, in 1989, and with Roby. doing the dramatic 'underscoring for The Glorious 12th. Laurel Paetz and John Wright play Eugina and Morgan Kale, the American fundamentalists on a recruitment drive into the heart of Orange Ontario. Their prodding and manipulation unearths the horrible secret that the powerful McKay family has been trying to forget. Marianne Copithorne, • Patricia Vanstone, and Julie Bond play Meggie, Prue and Grace, the. blood and marriage sisters of the McKay Family while Kevin Bundy, Jerry Franken and Wally McSween play Dalziel, Mr, McKay and Gerald. Young Colrn McKay is played by 13 year old Brent Thomas from Hullet Central School. in Londes- borough. Set design is by Morris Ertman, with costume design by Julia Tribe. Lighting • is by long-time Blyth associate Louise Guinand. The Glorious 12th, a co -produc- tion of the Blyth Festival and Al- berta Theatre Projects, runs to Sept. 11 before going on the road to tour Ontario in September and October, and then going to Alberta Theatre Projects for the spring of 1994. In 1992 the play was lauded as an, engaging and entertaining look at racism and intolerance not only in the historical context of •1927 but also in relation to Canada in the 1990s. "Unfortunately the play's relevance has not diminished with passing years," says Storey. "I am very happy that Blyth has given me the opportunity to tour.the play - especially to Alberta, where the KKK continues to be active." The Glorious 12th tickets start at $15.00 and are available by calling the Blyth Festival Box Office at 523-9300.
