August 25, 1993 B IRTHS Maize - Cleaveley - Brent Maize and Cherie Cleaveley, of Lucknow, are delighted with the safe arrival of their song Kurtis William Cleaveley Maize, a wee brother for Kyle. IMrtis arrived Aug. 14, 1993 at Wingham and District Hospital weighing 7 lbs. 2 oz. Happy grandparents are Joan and Gordon Maize, of . Lucknow, and Betty and Walter Cleaveley, of Orillia. Mark Dawson, son of Curtis and Sheila Dawson, graduated from Sir Sandford •Fleming College, Peterborough, on June 19, 1993 with a diploma in Law and Security Administration, Loss Prevention Management. Mark will begin work with Stinson Security in London in November. Helm -.Matthews Phyllis Matthews and Grant Helm, of Lucknow, were united in mariage on Aug. 7, 1993, by Rev. Albert Cook, at the Luck - now United Church: Matron of honor was Janice Huntley, of Stratford, a friend of the bride, along with bridesmaids, Debbie Conley, Lucknow, a friend of the bride, and Torrie Ursu and Jil- lian Chandler, both of Calgary, , nieces of the bride. Little Jessie Brandt, of Calgary, a great niece of the groom was the flowergirl. She was escorted by young David Conley, of Lucknow, a friend of the bride and groom. Sam Pal- mer, of Stratford, a friend of the groom was his best man. Ushers were Calvin McClenaghan, Luck - now, friend of,the groom, Adrian Rau, the groom's step -son, and -Doug`—Helm, Lucknow, the groom's nephew. A reception followed at the Lucknoyv District Community Centre. The couple honeymooned in Cape Cod, Mass. (Snyder Studio photo) Teen Circle group meets in Ripley .Pine River Church teen circle met at Huron Villa in Ripley on Aug; 12. Lois Pollock and Maijorie Wildfong were in charge. A delicious dinner was served by Liddle's Restatfrant. A moment's silence was held in memory. of Myrtle Ferguson. Lois Pollock had some contests after which a pleasant time was spent visiting. Ted Wildfong took a number of pictures. Volunteering to be in charge for next year were Marj Cottrill, Beatrice Collins and Wilda MacK- ay. Special people celebrate-, special birthdays Wednesday, Aug. 25 Alex Mowbray, of Pinecrest Manor Nur- sing Home is celebrating his 103rd birthday. Congratulations and best wishes on this occasion: Also celebrating birthdays on Saturday, Aug. 28 are Louisa Reed of Pinecrest who will be '91 and Isabelle England will be 90. Grace Gammie entertained the ladies of the Presbyterian WMS at her cottage at Amberley Beach on Aug. 23 in honor of Celia Aitchison's birthday. It was a fun time with games and contests. Loree Raymond and Nancy Aitchison assisted the hostess to serve a delicious supper complete with birthday cake supplied by Margaret Mowbray. Fred Ward has just returned from a trip that took him through Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, Prince Ed- ward Island and four Eastern United States visiting friends and relatives. In Nova Scotia he visited with brother George and wife Wilma, also brother Don and wife Mary. While in Newfoundland he visited with Mr. and Mrs. Len Beniot, the former Debbie Raynard, who is now a very popular radio announcer in Corner Brook. She likes Newfie. The trip was very' enjoyable and informative. Fred met many nice people from many places from all over America while staying at campgrounds in Canada and the United States. • On returning to Ontario he visited with friends in Stephensville, Fort Erie and they took him on a tour of UCKNOW by Mildred Loree Niagara Falls, Niagara -on -the -Lake and the vineyards outside the city of St. Catharines; also watched ships going through the Welland Canal at Port Colborne. Fantastic! Janine Hamilton has• moved into her home at 429 Havelock St. and is busy with renovations. Cindy and Melanie Willits and Erin and Regan Moran are spending a few days at the. United Church Camp at Silver Lake. Amy Austin is attending Camp Council for members of the CGIT this week. Six tables of shoot were play at the Drop in Centre on Aug. 20. High lady was Anna Dexter, with Grace Gibson in low position. Art Ernewein . was high for the men with Tom Philips in low spot. Edna - Young had the most shoots., The family. of Elsie Houston, here celebrating their mother's .80th birthday have now all returned to their homes. Jay Houston to Hong Kong on Aug. 15, Hugh Houston and friend Alana to Olds, Alberta; Aug. 16. Duane Houston, of Olds, Heath Houston of Calgary returned Aug. 23 after visiting with relatives at Harris_ton and Ripley, and having done some sightseeing at Niagara Falls, Kitchener, Sauble Falls and. Toronto. - Large crowd helps • Elsie celebrate her. 80th •Elsie Houston, of Lucknow, celebrated her 80th birthday with a gathering of over 350 friends and relatives at the Lucknow and District Community Centre, on Aug. 13. Mrs. Houston was born at Pinker- ton, Greenock Township, Sept 4, 1913 to William E. and Margaret (Napper) Taylor. Mrs. Houston it the last surviving member of her family. She had two brothers Mer- ton and Ray. Mrs. Houston and her husband, J. Harvey Houston, whci were married on June 5, 1939, •farmed' at Holyrood until they moved to Wil- lougby Street, Lucknow in 1973. Mr. Houston died in October 1984. Mrs. Houston's four sons: Jay. of Hong Kong, Hugh of Olds, Alberta, Kenneth of Harriston, and Wallace of Ripley, and their, families, including the eight grandchildren were all present to celebrate this special occasion. Irwin - Rose Suzanne Rose and Donald Irwin were united in marriage on July 24, 1993, at a candlelight ceremony at Winchester United Church, Winchester, Ontario. Suzanne is the daughter of Ed and Estella Rose of Mountain and Donald is the son of Orland and Myrtle Irwin of R.R. 1, Lucknow. After honeymooning in the eastern provinces, Suzanne and Don are living in Lucknow. Mrs. Houston has been an active member of the Lucknow'UCW and, choir, the Kinloss Kairshea Women's Institute, including ac- tivities at district and area levels. At the provincial level, she served a six year term as public relations officer. . A dinner for relatives and close fiends was catered to by the Mayfair Restaurant at the Com- munity Centre at 6 p.m. Some members of the Lucknow Legion Pipe Band serenaded guests as they arrived for the 8 p.m. recep- tion. A program followed with Highland dancing by Erin Eadie with piping by her grandfather, Frank McKenzie; singing by the Carruthers brothers - Garry, Boyd and Blain, accompanied by their sister, Karen Martyn; the trio of Barb_ az A:Evans. Helm, and Carol Atkinson, accompanied by Isobel Shepherd; • a vocal duet by Marilynne and Dale Gilchrist, ac- companied -by Anne Pritchard; ,and Ken Houston with daughters Amy and Angie played their brass • strunients _ ELwin—1Ia1.1_. -and— Raynard Ackert and—RaynardAckert presented an "Ode to Elsie" in song which was • en- joyed by all. Mrs. Houston then introduced her family and dancing followed to Cord's Old Tyme Music, Wingham. The Lucknow UCW served lunch* later. Friends were present from Halifax, N.S., Sundre and Olds, Alberta, Sombra, Burlington, Goderich, Calgary, Long Beach, California, Tucson, Arizona, Lon- don, Owen Sound, Pinkerton, Montreal, Port Elgin, Shallow Lake, Walkerton, England and local points. .
