Heifer Development Centres
Last year, five heifer development
centres were initiated across the
province. These centres were
developed to give cow -calf
producers an opportunity to have
replacement heifers grown out and
bred.- , For many producers, barn
space, feed supplies and bull power
are not adequate to do a good job
of raising and breeding replacement
heifers.
This fall there will be two heifer
centres available to local producers.
Don Farrell, of Ripley, (395-3346)
has room for about 60 heifers bom
between Jan, 1 and Mar. 15, 1993.
Heifers need to be weaned;
dehorned and vaccinated by Sept. 1,
1993 for delivery on Sept. 20. The
fee is $375 from Sept. 20 to Mar.
30, or for an additional $60 the
heifers can be left until grass time.
Don is also considering putting in a
second group of heifers in Novem-
ber.
FRrure County OMAF
ARM REPORT
Lloyd Mitchell at Owen Sound
will also be running a centre for the
second year. Delivery date . - for
spring born heifers ' will be ' early
November. For further details,
contact LLoyd, 376-5001 or the
Bryce or Grey County OMAF of-
fices.
These centres are not just a place
to have heifers fed. Growth data is
recorded, structure and temperament
assessed and pelvic measurements
taken. You have the opportunity to
compare your breeding programs to
others. Also . the centres attract
visitors and bus tours giving ad-
ditional exposure to your breeding
program. In the past year, several
heifers were sold directly out of the
centres.
