HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1993-08-25, Page 10Page 10 - Lueknow Sentinel, Wednesday, August 25, 1993 Two couples enjoy six-week trip to Alaska Fred and Donna Young, along with her twin sister, Yvonne Chase and Abe, left Dungannon by automobile for Alaska on June 8, returning Aug. 2. Enroute they stopped in Michigan and Minnesota, where at Bemidigi, they en- countered the Blue Oxen "Babe"_of Paul Bunyan fame. A cousin of the sisters, Etta, McMennamy, was visited in Thompson, North Dakota. They travelled back to the broad Dominion of Canada through Sas- katchewan, into Alberta to White Court, where they spent several days visiting Stephen and Cathy Chase and family of three. Stephen is the son of Yvonne and Abe. British Columbia's beauty spots visited included Taylor and Pink Mint. At Fort Nelson, to their surprise they met up with Ettabelle Bradley of Goderich and daughter Brenda Miller, Cambridge, who also were visiting Alice (Bradley) and Alex MacDonald and three daughters at Summitt, B.C. It was reported that rain had fallen for 31 consecutive days. The Liard Hot Springs at Muncho Lake was enjoyed by many folk, swimming in the mineral water with temperatures hovering between 110 degrees F and the boiling point when it comes out of the mountain side. ---- Zero mile of the Alaska highway was reached at Dawson City. Abe pinned a Goderich Legion ribbon on the famous `sign post at Watson Lake in the Yukon. It was at this point, they were detained by the Mounties at a road block because the native folks were protesting a saw mil being built on their land. A one-hour cruise was taken from Skagway, Alaska, to Haines, which actually was only 32 miles from the Canadian border. It was rough road construction from Tok, Alaska to Fairbanks. Lightning had struck and burned a vast acreage of forest at Tok. Delta Junction is the last mile of the Alaskan highway, number 1,422 miles. A stop at the North Pole revealed a four hour time' change from Ontario. Daylight is 24 hours of the day during July, gradually losing three to five minutes per day. December to March they are in complete darkness. From Anchorage, Alaska to Val- dez, where this town had been destroyed on Good Friday 1963 by an earth quake. The temperature was 104 degrees F. Hail, rain and flood had occurred since -they had passed through four days previous- ly. Homeward bound, the foursome visited Chuck Young in Surrey, B.C. and also Eric Wiggins and family. The Qkanagan Valley extends into the state of Washington, where fresh fruit is abundant. Brown, M.A., Ed.D., Chairperson of the Board Director of Education DUNGANNON through Wyoming included watching "Old Faithful" blow up at the geyser field and the Buffalo Bill Cody Dam, a huge construction site at Cody, Idaho. Near Mount Rushmore in South Dakota water was laying in the field with absolutely no crop. It was a fantastic six week tour that Donna would highly recom- mend to anyone. Lois Kerr and Bev Ohm had the opportunity of meeting Tom Elpin, star of the soap opera "Another World", when he appeared at Pioneer Sportsworld, Kitchener, on Saturday. Sunday, Aug. 15 was family reunion time. Margaret Taman, her daughter Judy Sproul and Delmar attended the Gillispie family gathering in Ayr, at the former homestead of Margaret. The 25th anniversary of the "Da- hmer Do" was held at Haysville, near New Hamburg, on Aug. 15. Roger and Elsie Pannabecker, Jim and Margaret Errington were present, along with relatives from Cambridge, New Hamburg, Elmira, Wasaga Beach and northern On- tario. Dianne (Williamson) and Dennis Gregory are the proud parents of a bouncing baby girl, Brandy Alice Marie, born Aug. 16 at the Alexandra Marine Hospital, Goderich. She tipped the scales at 9 lbs. and is another granddaughter for Judy and Milne (Mort) Gregory. The wedding of Jennifer Drennan and Stephene Rene took place in Laval, Quebec, at the Parish of St. Francois, De Sale on Aug. 7. Attending from this area were her parents J.C. and Emily Drennan, brothers Shawn, Paul and Liz from Guelph, uncle and aunt Ken and Gertie Wilson, Goderich.. Jennifer expresses appreciation for the gift certificate received from her Dungannon friends and neighbors. Alvin Sherwood was a guest of Don Hyde, Renae and Tara when Claudette, Nicole and Robert Sher- wood were entertained, the ocasion being Robert's birthday, George Durnin and nine year old daughter Rebecca, of Nashville, visited his mother Violet Dumin, Clinton and other family members in,the.area this past week. Nine tables of euchre were in action at the Dungannon Senior Citizen Centre on Wednesday .evening. Competition was keen with Gloria Pearson, Dora Alton, Ella Hand, and Kathleen Glen as win- ners in the ladies division. Fred Crawford and Harvey Sproul were top gents.. Jean Phillips, president of the local chapter of the United Senior Citizens of Ontario retumed home from the Annual Convention in Sault Ste. Marie. Sight seeing through out Michigan, the Mackinac Bridge and Island and Frankenmuth was enjoyed on the home ward journey. We also have the honor of Jean being elected as President of Zone 8 of Ontario. The grandchildren Tara, ,� thew and Jamie Barger, from Bur •ngton, spent the holidays with Grandpa Russell and Grandma Jean Phillips. Hodges, was guest speaker at the Rotary dinner and meeting held at the Bedford Hotel, Goderich, on Tuesday, August 17.. Karen was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Goderich to attend "The Adventurers in Citizenship Program" in Ottawa from May 4 to 7. Two hundred and thirty-five students from across Canada at- tended. Karen was billeted with the Chairman of the Ottawa Rotary, Sam Houston and his wife Fern. Also billeted with the Houstons were- Chelece Chipman of Calgary and Heather Foster of Vancouver. It's a memory for Karen that she will never forget. Executive members of the Canadian Diabetes Association, Huron Bruce Branch, met at the home of Joe and Teresa Courtney on Aug. 19. Plans were finalized for upcoming events.. Congratulations to Harry Boyle, son of Leona and the late Raymond Boyle, and to Cathy Williamson who were married in St. Ambrose Roman Catholic Church, Brussels, on Aug. 20. Harvey and Becky Culbert at- tended the 25th wedding anniver- sary celebrations for Clayton and Doris Nicholson. at Ripley Legion Hall on Aug. 22. Congratulations to Melissa Cline, daughter of Angus and Conine Cline, and granddaughter of Theodore and Ella Redmond, and to Shawn Breeze who were married in St. Augustine Roman Catholic church on Aug. 21. Their reception was held at the Lucknow Com- munity Centre that evening. Stag and does were held for Jamie Bere and Tracey Freel at the Auburn Community Centre and for Rob Maize, son of John and Mary Maize, and Lavonne Curran, daughter of Grant and Sandra Cur- ran at the Maize residence on Aug. 21. Congratulations to Kim Snowden, daughter of Ron and Barb Snowden who was crowned Miss Lucknow Fair Queen at the Lucknow Com- munity Centre on Aug. 20. Joe and Teresa Courtney, sons Gary and Brian and grandsons Michael, Nicholas and Brett camped at the Drayton Fair Grounds last weekend Aug. 20,21,22 and took in the first John Deere Antique tractor show "Johnny Popper Days" spon- sored by the Upper Canada Two Cylinder Club. All tractors in this club are two cylinder John Deere tractors with the first one built in 1916 and the last in 1960. The Courtneys took three tractors to the show; Joe's 720 Liquid Proprane (LP.), Gary's "B" and Brian's 80. They were all "one of a kind" on display and Gary's "B" was displayed in the "special" showring. John Kuik of R.R.7, Lucknow displayed his antique tractor on Sunday. Approximately 135 John Deere tractors and equipment were paraded around the grounds both Saturday and Sunday. Other events taking place were log sawing, stone crushing, shingle making, threshing, baling straw, grinding grain into chop, buzz sawing, wood splitting all done with old time machines, bag tieing, nail driving, kiddies' tractor pull,' ball games. A big at- traction was the ploughing with "all green machines", the arts and crafts show with small tractorson display and some for sale and prize draws. On Saturday evening a cold plate buffet dinner was followed by country dancing. On Sunday, Gary's wife Chris and daughter Elisha, Wayne and Debbie McDougall and son Jason (who trucked the tractors), Mike Wildgen and Jerry McPhee joined in the festivities. Cdrrection Bev and Trish Ohm recently attended the Travis Tritt, Trisha Yearwood and Little Texas concert in Toronto. Being a member of the fan club, the highlight of the perfor- mance was personally greeting the ,tslashville Stars back stage. (Sony for this mistake).
