school bus drivers take refresher course
by Pat Livingston
Thelma Bigney, Manager of Gor-
don T. Montgomery Ltd., Lucknow,
is proud of the company's "profe-
ssional" bus drivers. As a manager,
she knows it takes on-going training
in many areas for drivers to remain
professional and knowledgeable in
the mechanical and technical
aspects of driving, applicable road
laws, and bus management techni-
qr. They are, afterall, responsible

To that end, a one -day refresher
workshop/seminar .was held last
week that covered many areas of
safety.
Fire Chief Peter Steer's presen-
tation revolved around emergency
situations such as accidents or fires.
He said the bus drivers are the
"first line of defence" with the "fire
department as the secondary. Every
incident is unique; there is no one
way to handle the same type
situation in exacily the same man-
ner each time," Chief Steer said.
Factors change.
He demonstrated a controlled
burning of a school bus seat which
gives off toxic fumes, and
instructed on the proper safe
handling of a fire extinguisher.
OPP Constable Andy Burgess
discussed infractions of Ontario's
school bus stopping law -
"regardless of the posted speed
limit, traffic in both directions must
stop when a chrome yellow school
bus is stopped with its overhead red
signal lights flashing front and
rear." This applies to highways,
country roads, city, town or.village
streets, unless it is - a highway
divided by a median strip (physical
barrier or unpaved strip of ground
between the centre two lanes). The
stopping distance is at least 20
metres (65 ft).
In 'both cases traffic may not
proceed until the bus resumes
motion or the red signal lights have
stopped flashing.
Conviction for failure to stop
carries a stiff penalty; first offence,'
a fine of $250 and six demerit
points, according to Constable
Burgess. Subsequent offences are
dealt with more severely.
There appears, in some areas, to
be confusion as to what type of
traffic must stop. ALL DRIVERS
MUST STOP! And that includes
bicycles and horse drawn vehicles.
Montgomery bus drivers have
been provided with a Complaint
Form that assists drivers in detailing
an infraction of the law. Constable
Burgess then walked them through
a typical scenario from inception to
court.
Constable Gary Gaeler, of the
Walkerton OPP, who is liaison to
the Bruce County School Board,
explained the program he oversees
in the schools where bus safety is
taught to the children and two
monitors on each bus. The monitors
are appointed jointly, early in the
Cindy Fenton, one of Gordon T. Mongtomgery Ltd. bus drivers
practices the proper use of the fire extinguisher on a bus seat.

school term, by the principal and
bus driver. Mrs. Bigney said their
company also teaches the monitors
how to tine the radio in an emergen-
cy situation.
Mrs. Bigney talked about the
image of the bus and the driver.
She said, "School bus drivers are
very important members of the
safety team. The links to safety -
proper attitude, knowledge and skill
- must be developed through an
interest in safe driving."
• Discussion took place on the
ingredients that make a safe
delivery of students riding the bus.
A pamphlet, compiled by the
Health and Safety ' Committee of
Gordon T. Montgomery Limited,
outlines ways that parents can help
with safety procedures on school
buses.
The pamphlet was sent home to
public school students' homes in
1992, and will be circulated again
this fall. The next term of school is
fast approaching and once again the
bright yellow buses will be on the
streets and highways. Parents
should take the time now to review
safe bus procedures with their
children.
Mrs. Bigney said, "We are always
open to suggestions from parents.
We welcome their input at any
time."
In addition to Montgomery bus
drivers, area school principals, vice
principals, trustees, teachers and
board representatives attended the
seminar.
