"I started playing in high school," the former Walkerton 'District Secondary School student said. "I wasn't even going to play in my first year," she said. But she heard the team needed a player and she decided to try out. "I learned how to play on (a) Friday night. I played on Saturday," she . said, "I picked it up really easily." Aside from Grade 10, she played the sport for five years of hi school and her Coach suggested she try out for the provincial team. When Jill first tried out for the Ontario team, she travelled to Toronto and was one of about 120 girls who tried out for 15 positions Jill Campbell was part of the sliver medal winning .Ontario Field Hockey team at the Canada Summer Games In Kamloops, B.C. She made the team and, each year has ' had to go through the elimi'na.on process again. Since being on the team, she has travelled across much of Canada playing the other teams. "It's just been great meeting so many people," she said. To prepare for the Canada Games, Jill said, "this summer we practiced every • Saturday and Sunday since May first." Practices are held in Toronto and Jill has had to travel there every weekendto prepare. "You think, 'Is it really worth it?' but once you go out to the summer games (you realize). it is," she.said. She said a lot of people don't realize the time that is given up to practice for the sport. "It's a lot of time, but it pays off," she said. At the games she said, "everyone was so friendly and there was so much spirit out there." She said when othr teams weren't playing, they'clstill be there cheering on the Other teams. During the field hockey events.at the Canada Games, held in Kam- loops, British Columbia, the team played and won games against Alberta, Prince Edward Island and Quebec before defeating New Brunswick' in the semi-finals. The team moved on to the final game against 'B itish Columbia but lost with a score of 1-0, giving Ontario the silver medal; the first medal the Ontario field hockey team has won in 16 years at the summer .games. Jill's mom, Eleanor Campbell went to the games with two of Jill's aunts. "They were there. They watched all the games and they videotaped everything," she said. Her father, Duncan Campbell, was left behind to cheer for her at home. Jill works at the Erie Belle res- taurant. When she got back last week she was surprised to find out the regular customers who knew her had been watching the television coverage andknew how well she had done. She was glad to have had the support of her "fans" and Dana Clampet, who built her work schedule around her practices. She said the games are like Canada's own mini -Olympics. "That was my Olympics," she said. And like many athletes who retire after performing well at the Olym- pics, Jill is thinking about not trying out for next year's Ontario team this November. I'm saying now that I'm not going to play Ontario next year," she said. For now, she will keep playing, field hockey for the University of Guelph team where she will be starting her second year of the Family and Social Relations program. She would also like to go back to her high school and help introduce other students to field hockey. Once before, she went back and showed some of the soon-to-be grade nine students what field hock- ey wasall about. "When we did that, we got a lot of girls out playing," she said. For grade nines, she said many students are timid and don't easily get involved in sports and activities at the school.
