Whitbys wed for 5.0 years.
by Pat Liyingston ' ?
The place was Crockham Hill, 25
miles from London, England, The
date was Aug. 19, 1943. The
characters in the scene were a
young, beautiful girl named Mabel
and a handsome, young soldier
named Russell Whitby. On that day,
50 years ago, they were united in
marriage.
And 50 years liter, Mabel con-
tinues to laugh, as her husband
jokingly says it was package of
Wrigley's chicklets that got the girl
with the "sparkling eyes", who he
met at the Royal Oak Pub, to be his
wife.
Those were the days of war, and
Mabel, like other women, worked
in the Women's Land Army .doing
farm work. Buster, as he is known
locally, shipped out the day after
their wedding, to return for a brief
reunion in two months. Then he
was off to France.
Buster was shipped home in 1945
and Mabel followed a year later.
Apart from leaving her family;
Mabel said, "I didn't mind the
move. Those were exciting days."

Buster, over the years until his
retirement, did carpentry work with
his brother George, worked with
Bill Hunter at the garage and Roy
Havens. He finished up his working
days doing part time shifts at the
LCBO.
Mabel worked at a local grocery
store and restaurant in earlier years.
They have lived at their home on
Willoughby Street since 1953 when
they purchased it from Buster's
parents, who bought in 1937
A joint hobby of the couple is
their massive collection of bottles
which number in the thousands.
And Mabel in her spare time is an
avid card player - bridge, crib or
shoot.
Changes have been numerous
over the last 50 years. The roads
are certainly different says Mabel.
Cars, income and computer tech-
nology are also mentioned.
Mabel and Buster were wined and
dined last Thursday in London by
their daughter Sharon and family.
They enjoyed a cruise on the
Thames River and a family dinner.
Mabel's sister and brother-in-law,
visiting from England, were able to
share to the special occasion as
well. The Whitbys have one
grandchild and four great
grandchildren.
Summing it all up, Buster says,
"We've had a good married life."
Congratulations from all your
friends in Lucknow and area.

Boost for Wingham
For Wingham, the announcement
comes as another sign that the
economy is starting to look brighter
for that town. On Aug. 5, Canadian
Agra confirmed their plans to open
a compressed hay processing plant
in town.
Wingham am Mayor I Moreland,
an
said, of the
school,
"It's s been part
of the fabric ofour community
for
over0 years, y ars, a very important
part. One of the other things that
encourages me is the Macdonald
block and what Murray Simpson
has done (with the old mill). The
town looks an awful lot better than
many small towns. It shows people
have faith in the town. If people
feel within themselves Wingham
has a place in the 'sun, then you're
halfway there."
