The place was Crockham Hill, 25 miles from London, England, The date was Aug. 19, 1943. The characters in the scene were a young, beautiful girl named Mabel and a handsome, young soldier named Russell Whitby. On that day, 50 years ago, they were united in marriage. And 50 years liter, Mabel con- tinues to laugh, as her husband jokingly says it was package of Wrigley's chicklets that got the girl with the "sparkling eyes", who he met at the Royal Oak Pub, to be his wife. Those were the days of war, and Mabel, like other women, worked in the Women's Land Army .doing farm work. Buster, as he is known locally, shipped out the day after their wedding, to return for a brief reunion in two months. Then he was off to France. Buster was shipped home in 1945 and Mabel followed a year later. Apart from leaving her family; Mabel said, "I didn't mind the move. Those were exciting days." ::::::..:.::::::::::: W::LLL>i:i .>:: x,.
