its rrbst successful Garden

Canadian Agr
says: hold job
applications
After last week's story about
Canadian Agra's new agricul-
tural plant in Wingham, the
company was flooded with ap-
plications for employment.
Canadian Agra advises that
applications will not be accepted
for employment at the new super
compressed hay plant at this
time. The plant will not be
operating until 1994 and notices
will be placed in the newspaper
when hiring begins.
Crafters will discuss catalogue idea
A meeting to discuss a co-
operative mail-order catalogue to
sell made -in -Huron crafts and cot-
tage industry products will be held
Aug. 24 in Blyth.
A group of about a dozen ar-
tisans, small food processors and
marketers have beenworking on the
idea of a mail-order catalogue for
about six' weeks, holding weekly
meetings to work out the details.
On Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. in the Blyth
Festival's June Hill Rehearsal Hall
( above the administration building
at the corner of Queen and Dinsley)
the group is inviting all interested
Huron residents to hear more about
the catalogue idea and listen to
representatives from the Ontario
IF WELFARE
ISN'T CHANGING'
PEOPLE'S LIVES,
ISN'T IT TIME
WE CHANGED
WELFARE?
Ontario's welfare system isn't
working. It isn't helping people to
learn new skills and find jobs. It puts
roadblocks in the way of people who
want to work and traps them in a
lifestyle of dependency.
The O{ttario government is going.
to scrap the welfare system as we
know it and replace it with new pro-
grams that help people get training;
get education and get back to work:
• JOB LINK will place over 100,000
unemployed Ontarians each year in
high schools, community colleges,
training courses, and pre-employ-
ment programs and connect them
to apprenticeship programs and
workplaces.
• The Ontario Adult Benefit will
help adults meet their basic
needs such as food, clothing
and shelter while making the
transition to work. It will also
provide long-term income to
those who aren't able to work.
• The Ontario Child Income
Program will provide a monthly
cheque to parents with low incomes -
including parents who are, working
full-time.
The new programs will begin
operating in 1995.

Let's Help Ontario Get Back To Work
Ministry of Agriculture and Food
(OMAF) in Guelph speak about
forming a marketing co=operative.
,o up is working in co-
operation with the Blyth Festival
which will include the catalogue as
part of its pre -Christmas promotion
to its 20,000 name mailing list. The
idea is to promote Huron County
cottage and small industries by
encouraging the purchase of locally -
made gifts for Christmas or fqr the
home.
It's hoped the catalogue will offer
a wide cross-section of items
produced in the county. Those
artisans and crafters participating in
the catalogue will pay a share of
the catalogue printing and mailing
costs, plus a share of the cost of
filling orders.
The organizing group has been
working on details of catalogue
printing and design and the
mechanics of filling orders. The
assistance of the OMAF will help
participants decide if tfie co-
operative format is the best option
for the organization. A special
branch of OMAF has been set up to
encourage marketing co-operatives
to promote value-added production
from Ontario's farms and rural
areas.
