HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1993-08-18, Page 3China painting is a fine art For the fourteenth consecutive year, several area ladies, along with others from further afield, gathered for a three-day china painting workshop in Lucknow. China painting is an ancient decorative art. The colors and tech- niques used to decorate porcelain have never changed, and remain the same as those used in China, where porcelain originated over 700 years ago. Locally, during the last 10 years in Huron and Bruce counties, china painting classes have expanded to areas such as Bayfield, Clinton, Goderich, Seaforth and Exeter, in addition to Lucknow. In the states, china painting is now considered a fine art. The transparent china paint neces- sitates several sessions of painting for each piece of porcelain. After each session the piece is fired in a kiln which fuses the glaze and attains the depth and detail. A simple object may be completed in two or three firings; a more complex piece may <require more than 20. China painting is obviously not for those who wish to finish an article in one sitting. Judy Lehman, of New. Haven, Michigan, has taught the art of porcelain painting to the Lucknow group, which includes one from Sombra and one from Chatham, for three years. The former elementary school teacher has been, involved in some aspect of artistic painting for 22 years. The last 15 years she has devoted herself to china painting, with 12of them as a teacher of the art travelling to many states. Prior to that she devoted her time to oil and watercolor paints. Judy Lehman, of New Haven, Michigan, shares a joke with one df the workshop par- ticipants as she puts a little finishing touch to this piece of china. (Pat Livingston photo) Mrs. Lehman's credentials are numerous. She talks with ex- citement about the expansion and growth of the art and quickly reas- sures the uninitiated' that artistic talent is not a must. "It's more desire and the effort put into the art, than a. lot of drawing ability that can make a successful por- celain artist." One other lady said, "If you have the desire, the rest comes." The response to "What draws you ladies to this art?" was as varied as the personalities of those taking the 'Workshop. "Fascinating, we're crazy, rewarding, relaxing and the Rhoda. MacKenzie, of Lucknow has 'been a china paint artist since 1973, and was one of those who took part in the three day workshop instructed by Judy Lehman. Many beautiful pieces decorate Mrs. MacKenzie's home and bring her much enjoyment in various ways! For Mrs, Lehman, the delicacy of painting on china and in particular on something other than a flat canvas is a challenge. The students, which includes three area teachers of the art, say they are very fortunate in having someone as talented as Mrs. Lehman to teach them new techniques. The calibre of her work speaks for itself when you consider that several, pieces now adorn homes in Japan. She also has exhibits at the World Museum in Oklahoma. Mrs. Leh- man recently published , her own instructional booklet "Create Your Own Treasures.". While Mrs. Lehman leaves something of herself in Lucknow each year, by way of sharing her knowledge, she also . takes something home with her from Lucknow. Her husband has a stan- ding order for her to bring back four loaves of Armstrong Bakery's cherry bread. Anyone interested in obtaining further information about this an- cient art is welcome to call Rhoda , MacKenzie in Lucknow. She'd' be only too delighted to fill you in on the cost and the rewards.
