Centre will be for community use
To the editor:
The Huron. Children's Aid Society
Family Resource Centre is in the
process of being built on McEwan
Street in Goderich to address the
needs of the Children's Aid Society
and of other agencies that impact
on families and children in Huron
County. With a grant from the
Ministry of Community and Social
Services, the walls have been
erected, but the help of the com-
munity to assist in funding the total
project is needed..
The Children's Aid Society, with
a staff of 32 professionals and 70
volunteers, helped 570 families and
1169 children in Huron County last
year. This does not include the
.families served by Summer Day,
Camp and the Huron County
Christmas Bureau.
There are also 60 foster families
!r0 THE EDITOR
in the County who work hard to
meet the basic child care and
protection needs.
The agency's intake has increased
by 53 per cent in the last three
years. Raising children in the 90s is
very stressful, as every family
knows. Sometimes we need a bit of
help.
The Huron CAS Family Resource
Centre .will be a building .that en-
courages community use and invol-
vement by providing a. broad range
of community services including
parenting workshops, seminars for
stress management in families,
marital and family counselling and
independence programs for teens in
care. It ,will also serve the ad-
ministrative needs of the CAS
Agency as well as being more cost-
effective than any other alternative
investigated.
CAS has outgrown any existing
facilities available in Goderich. The
Ministry of Community and Social
Services has responded with a grant
of $1,246,000 and the balance of
$312,000 must be raised locally.
We're building a brighter future
for our children! We need your
help!
To "learn more about this present-
day building project, call the
Children's Aid Society at 220
Huckins Street, Goderich, telephone
524-7356 and ask for the
Fundraising Council.

contravention of a long-standing

fined $2,000.
The ,complaint was received,
on May 9, by Tree Commis-
sioner Joe Gibson regarding the
cutting of undersized trees in
Colborne Township. A subse-
quent inspection took place with
cooperation between the County,

introduced by London North MPP

final reading last Thursday.
The two .years prior tothe
implementation of Bill 124 will
give the government more time to
promote the use of bicycle helmets.
During that time the government
intends to work in partnership with
safety and community groups,
,police, cyclists and helmet
manufacturers to encourage safer
cycling and increase the number of
cyclists vol untarily.wearing helmets.
Ontario's Transportation
Minister Gilles Pouliot said $3.5
million will be provided annually to
support measures such as bike paths
and lanes for provincial cyclists.
at which time it was determined
that 20 per cent of the harvest
was deemed to be undersized

harvested was hard or sugar
maple which at present is brin-
ging premiant prices due to its
high demand'.
The purpose of the bylaw is to

Christianity
The Kinlough Presbyterian
Women's Missionary Society met at
the clwrch for the July. meeting
with Mabel McEwan as -hostess.
Rpllcall was something we could •
or should do to promote Chris-
tianity. Nina ' -McDonald had
prepared a splendid devotion from
Genesis and Matthew, which Lor-
raine MacPherson read. It was a
true spirit of Christian love.
Marilyn Reid took the study on
"Is the church alive and well?".
The ladies divided into groups to
discuss die seed and the sower.. The
singing of hymns interspersed the
meeting.
Parishioners are asked to check
the time of warship as the hour is

Anyone who plans on harvesting
wood from their woodlot for
commercial purposes is required
to file a "Notice of Intent" with
the County at least five days
prior to the onset of the
operation. Trees, unless defec-
. five, must meet a minimum
diameter size to be eligible for
legal harvest. (ie hard maple
must be 18" in diameter or 57"
in circumference measured 18"

name on a list of 500 veterans of
the War of 1812 which was
presented to the Prince.
In 1861, the Prince sent Secord
100 English pounds ($250). It was
the only financial reward she
received for her deed.
Fame came slowly, and often
inaccurately. An early historian
embellished the tale by adding, a
cow, which Secord - was said to
have used as a decoy.
Following her death at 93 in
1868, several - monuments were
erected in her honor. In- 1913;
Senator Frank O'Connor chose her
name for his new brand of
chocolates.
Although her heroism may, have
had scant reward in her lifetime, as
the wry joke would have it, had it
not been for Laura Secord we might
be eating Fannie Farmer sweets on
Valentine's Day.
