The class of 1948 reminisces at reunion In September 1948, 33 young students embarked upon their secondary education at the Luck - now High School. On Saturday,July 31, 1993, 19 of these classmates, along with spouses or friends, gathered at the Lucknow Town Hall to renew old friendships, reminisce and peruse old pictures provided by the classmates. This was their first reunion. When asked why a Grade .9 reunion was being held after 45 years, the answer was simple - it was time to renew those friendships that were initiated so many years ago. Those in atten- dance missed those who were unable to make it. Donations were received and the classmates held a tree plan- ting ceremony at Victoria Park, near the site of their old high school which burned in 1967. ' Dinner was enjoyed, more laughs and chatter and then they jobrneyed on their ways. The Grade 9 Lucknow High School Class of 1948 held a reunion this past weekend In Lucknow.. Those able to attend were from the left, back row, Don MacNay, Flussell Barr, Doug Hackett, Ellwood Irwin, Don Thompson, Douglad Campbell. Absent when the photo was taken was Frank Alton: (Pat Livingstonphoto) Will compete in summer games Four thousand young athletes, from all across Canada, will par- ticipate in the VII Canada Summer Games, in Kamloops, B.C., between Aug. 8 and 21. Amongthose athletes will be 19 - year -old Jill Campbell of Kinloss Township. She will be a member of the Ontario Women's Field. Hockey team. For Jill, to play in. the Canada Summer' Games is a dream come true. For five years now, she has been a player on the Ontario team. This has meant practices in Toronto every weekend from the first of May until the national tournaments in July or August. This year she was one of over 70 trying out for • the team whichhad to be cut to 15 players. Throughout her entire life Jill has been heavily involved in sports, both at the elementary Schools in Holyrood and Lucknow, and at the Walkerton District Secondary School. In September she will •be entering her second year at the ' University of Guelph, working towards her Bachelor of Applied Science degree. She is also a player on the university's varsity field hockey team. The Canada Games .started in 1967 in Quebec City. These winter games were followed in 1969 by , the. first summer games. They have continued to be held every two years, alternating between summer and winter. The Canada Games Flag is awarded to the province or territory which accumulates the greatest .number of points. Ontario has won the Flag at 10 of the 12 games held. ., Team Ontario is made up of 354 athletes and 67 coaches and managers., Twenty-two sports are featured at this year's games -- the largest number ever in the history of the games. Athletes with disabilities have also been included as full competitors for the first time. CBC will provide TV coverage of the games. The opening ceremonies will be shown live from 3 to 5 p.m. (Eastern Daylight Time) on Sunday, Aug. 8. From Monday to Friday there will also, be game highlights shown each eening from 7 to S p.m. The field hockey games will be from Aug. 9 to 13. Jill and her teammates will proudly take part in the opening ceremonies with Team Ontario, all attired in their matching red and white uniforms. Jill is the daughter of Duncan and Eleanor Campbell of R.R. 4, Kin- cardine. • Good luck, Jill! JIII Campbell, of. Kinloss Township, Is a member of the Ontario Women's Field Hockey team that will compete in the VII Canada Summer Games In B.C. Aug. 8 to 21. (Tracey Doerr photo) Accepting entries for Queen of the Fair The Lucknow Agricultural Society is once again asking for the cooperation of area businesses in sponsoring young area ladies in the Queen of the Fair Pageant. The pageant will take place on Aug. 20, at the Lucknow District Community Centre. Dancing will take place from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. with old and new favorites being provided by Rick Passmore. Intermissions will take place during the evening when the contes- tants will be introduced and the Queen subsequently crowned. Application forms are available at the Sentinel office or. phone Ruth Bell, Gloria Messenger, Mary Lynn Gilchrist, Jeanette Wardrop or Mur- ray or Elizabeth Irvin. Miss Lucknow will represent the village at the Miss Mid -Western Ontario Pageant on Sept. 18 during the Lucknow. Fall Fair: She will also enjoy a two-day stay in Toron- to during the 1994 Fairs Convention in February, and represent Lucknow at the 1994 CNE Pageant. The Deadline for registration is Aug. 10. Jessie Johnston A special lady celebrates a very special birthday Wow, that was some party hosted in honor of Jessie Johnston's 90th birthday on Sunday. It was a great time for visiting and reminiscing as friends and relatives from near and far. paid tribute to a wonder- ful lady. Mrs. Johnston was born on August 5, 1903 to Mr. and Mrs. J.K. MacDonald. She was one of . five children in her family. She and her late husband, Noble Allan Johnston, a World War I veteran, were charter members of the Lucknow Legion Branch' 309 and the Ladies Auxiliary to the Legion. Mr. and Mrs. Johnston had two children, William Allan and Ardonna (LeGrand). The .family, now includes six grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, along with, many nieces, nephews, and great, great, great nieces and nephews. On display at the open house, held at the Legion, were many pictures from long ago and the present, as well as various cer- tificates from the Lucknow Pres- byterian Church, where Mrs. Johnston taught 'Sunday School; for over 25 years. She was also the first female member of the Session.
