Also the O.M.B. board wants all interested persons regarding this matter to attend the meeting as to maximize the benefits of this process. Sincerely, Ruth Buchmeier Representing the interested citizens of Kinloss Lucknow vandals are senior teens To the editor: Re Editorial July 21 "Parents are responsible..." Tnie, but then in paragraph three "It is the com- munity's responsibility..." As a member of this community 1 refuse to accept that respon- sibility. One of the most fulfilling aspects of parenting is the knowledge that youhave given, to the best of your ability, to the adult world, a member that respects him- self and others. Not easy, not al- ways successful, but must be done by the parent not the community. The vandals of Lucknow are not children (except by law), they are . senior teens who are bigger and smarter than the rest of us. They know the OPP won't or can't catch them, and the community has no power, in law, to stop them. So where are we Mr. Burgess? Janet Cook Luxton urged government tobuy buffalo • from page 4 friendship was strained and they spent most of their time sitting at opposite ends of the vessel clutching their guns, but they were determined to continue. Finances ran thin when .they reached Samoa, so Luxton set himself up as a professor of card games, specializing in poker -- which became the particular affec- tion of the Governor. All told, Luxton and Voss stopped at 42 South Seas ports to a variety of receptions, One king was so taken. with Luxton that he of- fered him a choice of daughters for marriage and a coconut grove of his own. On another • island, confron- tation with hostile residents called the ancient cannon to their deftnse. Luxton abandoned the expedition to recover from injuries suffered in a shipwreck off Australia, but Voss successfully guided the Tilikum to England, arriving in September 1904. • When Luxton returned to Canada he settled in Banff, Alberta, where he began a publishing business, a trading post and a year-round hotel. Luxton committed himself to the community, leading his biographers to nickname him "the oracle of Banff." During a card game, he helped conceive the Winter Car- nival and in the summer, Luxton conducted the annual Indian Days Festival in conjunction with the Stoney. When an influenza epidemic struck near a trading post Luxton operated in northerly Morely, he supplied much needed food and medical supplies to the isolated native population without compen- sation. The business . failed, but Luxton was named an Honorary Chief of both the Blackfoot and Stoney tribes. In 1909,. Luxton suggested that the Canadian government purchase a herd of Montanna buffalo to replenish the prairie herds which had been hunted almost to the point of extinction. These animals provided the foundation stock for herds at Wainwright National Park. Norman Luxton's legacy of ad- venture and open-hearted vision of the true meaning of "tilikum" con- . tinues to thrive. Today, the original dugout "Tilikum" is permanently berthed in Victoria, B.C. and every year thousands of visitors enjoy the spirit of the place and the spirit of this unique Canadian adventurer at the Luxton Museum, which is housed in a log building beside the Bow River in Banff.
