with Auburn family
Scott Frazee,' of Midland, New Brunswick, is one of five participants
taking part in an Interprovincial 4-H Exchange program this .summc.
Seventeen -year-old Scott spent six days at Betty and .Dan MacDonald's
RR 3, Auburn horse farm before moving on to a mixed farm in
Seaforth on Wednesday, July 14.
The exchange program, sponsored by the Royal Bank, began with all`s
five participants.meeting,in Toronto for three days. This gave them time
to meet each other and enjoy a bit of sightseeing before visiting with
their host families. The students came from New Brunswick, Nova
Scotia, Newfoundland, British Columbia and Manitoba.
Scott said the purpose of the exchange is to see how hast families
live, what they do and to visit their communities. The students also get
a chance to see how 4-H activities are conducted around the country.
"You take what you learn back to your home club," said Scott. "You
could also be asked to speak to local clubs and organizations about your
experience when you return home."
Betty, who started.a 4-H horse club in the area last year,. said they
ve_enjoy the --family They -hope -to -meet_ him
again if he makes it to the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto this November.
Miranda, MacDonald's oldest daughter, will be of age to apply to the
exchange program next year. After having Scott visit their home,
Miranda said she's interested in applying to the program.
Scott, who has, taken part in several exchange programs in his own
province, recommends senior 4-H studentsapplyfor the interprovincial
exchange program because you get to meet lots of new people and you
get to see a totally different part of the country.
Scott will be attending agricultural college this fall. Eventually, he'd
like to take on the family dairy' farm.

this year. Instead, tile drainage loan

come; first served basis up to and
including the November 1 deben-
ture date. After November 1,

Red Meat 11
Despite last August cutbacks,
Red Meat II continued to play a
large part in beef and sheep
operations in Bruce County in 1992.
From April 1, 1992 to March 31,
1993, over .6 million dollars flowed
into the county to the benefit of 460
producers. This represent 23 per
cent of the total expenditure across
the province.
Bruce County had the most
producers enrolled in the cow -calf
and stocker programs. This you
would expect, since census statistics
show Brlae County, as the second
largest county for -beef "diAVs' With
27,000. Neighboring Grey County
is the largest with. over 34,000 beef
cows and Renfrew is third with
24,000.
Producers are proud to boast that
Bruce County is "Beef Country".
However, other statistics Red Meat
II makes one wonder why we are
bragging? Last fall Weigh Clubs
received funding from O.C.A. and
OMAF to assist in providing
weighing services to • cow -calf
operators for the period August 6 to
December 31. Unfortunately, Bruce
County last out on a large share of
this grant because the majority of
Bruce cow -calf operators did not
bother to weigh their ,calves.
Only 48 per cent of participants
from the fall of 1991 weighed in
1992 which accounted for only 35
per cent of the calf numbers usually
weighed. - This compares to a
provincial average of 61 per cent.
Grey County had a 60 per cent
participation rate and Renfrew. had
54 per cent. Bruce County had the
sixth lowest participation rate across
the province!! Is this something, to
be proud ofrT woiuld"'thunk not:
