medical prospects.
During this time he could often
be seen travelling the countryside
on. a horseback in the company of
Micmac Indians and playing the
flute while they helped him gather
geological specimens. •
-
His 'published treatises on
• geology established his reputation
and from 1838 to 1842 he served as
geologist for the govern ment of
Nova Scotia. His optimistic reports
about various mineral deposits led
several speculators to rush into
ventures that went bankrupt.
Gesner was held responsible! He
opened a museum of his artifacts in
Saint John, and when it failed, his
creditors accepted the collection in
place of payment. Many of Ges
ner's pieces formed part of the
foundation of the New Brunswick
Museum. .
Gesner returned to medical prat-
se--in--Cornwallis; devoting---his--
spare time to scientific experiments,
and pursuing his interest in refining
hydrocarbons.
At an 1846 lecture in Prince
Edward Island, He introduced a
substance. he called "keroselain"
after a Greek word meaning "wax •
oil". It was a clear, white oil that he
distilled from the treated vapours of
heated coal:
Candles, .whale oil and other
illuminants of the day. produced
dingey light and greasy, odorous
smoke. "Burning fluid" composed.
of turpentine and alcohol produced
a bright light, often accompanied by
explosions.
Gesner's . oil could be handled
easily and burned with, a brilliant
yellow light that produced almost
no smoke.
In 1854, Gesner secured and sold
his patents. Wealthy developers in
Long Island, N.Y., set up a factory
under his guidance, and "kerosene"
became the most successful ,lamp
oil ever produced.
Unfortunatelybusiness was not
his strong suit, and in the late 1850s
Gesner found himself released from
his_ 'position as the company
chemist.
Abraham Gesner ' =- a true
Canadian geflus --'died in 1864.
His other inventions included char-
coal briquets, asphalt paving, wood
preservative and insulated electrical
wire.

authorities - for life.
Surety of sentence is a long -
needed deterrent to crime in
Canada.
The real story in the
Homolkaifease case is that
Canada's criminal justice system
itself is being . put on trial.
Canadians deserve much more
accountability from their investment
in the Criminal Courts of Canada.
The wishes and wisdom of law-
abiding, citizens need to fall on ears
of a government that listens, not
ignores!
