HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1993-07-21, Page 3Nigel wins three more medals The three medals Nigel won on ' July 3 now brings his total count up to 10 medals. However, it's not the medals or competition that counts, but that he's always trying his best. Nigel Black is seven -years -old and has been training with the Wingham Optimist Track and Field Club since last fall. Nigel is the son of Joan and Dave Black of RR 1, Lucknow. When first asked if he would like to join the dab, Nigel wasn't so sure if he'd like that. "I said no at first because I didn't know anybody, but now I've got to know everybody," he said in an interview last week. "I like running and I get to exercise a lot." Volunteer coaches help make the competition fun. "The club is a lot of fun. The coaches urge you to strive for your personal best rather than have you look at it as just competing against others," said Joan. "This makes for a nice atmosphere when you got to a meet." Nigel has taken part in winter indoor track and field meets as well as outdoor summer meets. His favorite events are the long jump and 800m. At the July 3 meet in Oshawa Nigel broke the club's Mite (ages 7, 8) records in the 400m and 800m, placing second in both events, and finished second in long jump. "The kids get to try every event, rather than being placed in any specific event. This way they get to see what they like to do," said Joan: Nigel met Olympians Michael Smith and Doug Wood, of Win- gham, at the last meet. Smith is "nice with the kids and a very good inspiration to them," said Joan, The Wingham club practices twice a week at F.E. Madill Secon- dary School. Participants don't have to commit themselves to every practice,. but do have to make a commitment to attend some meets throughout the year, she said. A practice session consists of Nigel Black, 7, of RR 1, Lucknow, came home from the Ontario Outdoor Minor Track and Field Championships with three medals. The meet was held in Oshawa on July 3 and Nigel attended the meet along with other members of the WIngham Optimist Track and Field Club. (Debbie Davidson photo) warm-up exercises, playing fun games and then practicing a specific event. Sharon Askes, of Lucknow, helps the young athletes with their training exercises. Although Nigel's five-year-old brother Hamish has participated in pre -Tyke events, he's still not old enough to join the Wingham club. However, Hamish has every inten- tion of joining the club this fall. Club practices begin in Septem- ber, and the first meet will find Nigel trying to do his personal best again. West Wawanosh history still needed The typesetters are busy preparing the West Wawanosh history book. Committee members have not hung up their'notebooks yet and are still tracking down lost names and that one great photo that would complete a farm history. Editor Rhea Hamilton Seeger is in a fevered pitch to find the original picture taken during the building of the Si Augustine Church. She has a photocopy of the church showing the workers taking a break and the front of the limestone structure is almost finished except for the very LUCKNOW & DISTRICT LIONS CLUB Dabber Bingo Lucknow Community Centre NEXT BINGO SUNDAY, JULY 25/93 $1000.
