And in terms of the retubing project at Bruce 'A', Strong said it is an option that has been kept open and will remain open. It is a "very plausible alternative" for long term supply, according to - Strong, particularly since.the facility already exists and a new one would not have to be built. Strong said a decision would have to be made "in the next few years". "In the meantime, we have tried to mitigate the (adverse) effects on this community." Community leaders, including Southampton Mayor Art Knechtel and Saugeen Township Reeve Har- ry, Thede, praised Strong for his commitment to the community and for his efforts to make Ontario HJ„dro economically viable. "If anyone can turn this utility around, sir, you can," Knechtel said. Hydro chair defends `love' quiz Ontario Hydro Chairman Maurice Strong defended his corporation's actions after what has come to be known as the 'love quiz' was sent to some 5,000 customers. The $1.3 million survey, which includes questions relating . to customers' private lives, has many. people questioning the integrity of a corporation that would spend that much money on a survey in light of its $34 million debt. But Strong said the survey would help the corporation understand and listen to its customers. "It seems like a lot of money but it was a more in-depth sur- vey than we normally do," Despite the cost, Strong said it was the "necessary and respon- sible thing to do". He added "some of the ques- tions may seem a bit peculiar" but he defended Hydro's actions, saying it was important to get to know the customer. :ry x7:i::s<}:r;:.:;;::5:!iF'r:.;r:.'•i:f:'','.; f:r.,:: a?ac :k>iti:?f:.v>.;$.:tf.++£..<.„7x>n;^:`<:2>:::}::('«::y:;:s<:;:.::}^::.::: ;.,.} nF ..? eft,;.,,. , { <. .: &.,Q:}. : !.•: ,v...€:,4•'•'•',•.. ..'3.'::;x$Y',o-i%; .J'.,'°n:rirrFir ___. -_i. >t:s%# .::t:i:.,,. r Lucknow \4llg—— arlt LUCKNOW 528-3001 We Reserve The Right To Limit Quantities To Normal Family Requirements j :};\y}:: ,;yam}},.:.,}.h ,...,}:: y:.:..}::.;.:,:•::: .};.: •,• '?'i 't£ : :Y'%..:.a$,:: } t+;`<3.; ',; E•1 :q::;,ba:.`.S:i>z ''.::x }^<.:'...,',rK,. :•: w: s`:.'.,> . Theresa Gollan told Lucknow Council, at its July 13 meeting, she wants to cut into the trunk line for another connection. Council, depen- ding on the advice of its engineer, suggested another alternative could be worked out. Gollan also complained that a broken Cable T.V. line had damaged a tree on her property. Council will contact the Cable Co. to see what can be done. Tender accepted Council accepted the tender from Lavis Construction to reconstruct Willoughby Street at a price of $5,1704.33 including PST and GST. Only two tenders, the other from Storm Sewers, were received for the project. Fire Marshal's Report Lucknow Fire Chief, Peter Steer, presented council with the Fire Marshal's June 23, 1993 report on property located at 809 Havelock Street. According to the report, there are nine counts of possible potential violations. Council has referred this matter for legal advice. .,area principal retires instead of transferring. An area principal has opted for early retirement instead of a transfer. The Huron County Board of Education accepted Shirley Weary's resignation at the board's special meeting held July 5. Weary is prin- cipal of Bluewater Secondary School. According to a press release, she was scheduled for a transfer to F.E. Madill Secondary Schooi in Win- gham, effective September ember 1 1993. "The students, staff and com- munity of that school deserve a principal who is prepared to make a commitment for a minimum three- year period in order to effect ap- propriate change within the school. I am not prepared to make that commitment." Weary was the founding principal at Bluewater Secondary School which opened in September 1986. In a telephone interview, Weary said she had discussed retirement with "the powers that be" last fall. She had , proposed she remain at Bluewdter Secondary School (located just south of Goderich on Hwy. 21) for the. 1993/'94 year and then retire. "But if it's a choice of going to Wingham or going early, I'll go early," she said. "Ten years ago I would have leaped at this, but I have no desire to drive to Wingham through the winter. I feel I've done my share of winter driving." Board director -designate .Pa ul Carroll said WeazYssresignation has put two other transfers on hold. Weary will remain at Bluewater until October 1. South Huron District High School (Exeter) prin- cipal Joe Wooden was to come to . Bluewater and the current principal of F.E, Madill, Herb Murphy, was 'to take over at South Huron. '"Because of the Social Contract and other matters, it didn't seem appropriate to go on a recruiting exercise until later in the fall," said Carroll. "So, to minimize the dis- ruption to the schools, the transfers will be delayed until January 1994." Team is financially secure and looks good heading into the 1993/94 season •from page 1 have $6,000 in the clear to get started again: If you take a leave of absence you only have to have $1,093.85 for the OHA fine bond and $540 for the players' cards." Duncan further said he, hoped the leave would only be for season and he will be working to clear the 1922-93 debt. ' When contacted Ist week, Recreation Director Jane Dawson said no further progress had been made with the debt situation. As it stands, the team will not be allotted ice time for the upcoming season. lronmen Look Good Meanwhile, the Jr. C. Ironmen are looking pretty good heading into. next: season. Brown said the team is financially secure and on paper is losing only one player. Rugged blueliner Joe Walker, who returned to the fold after three seasons .with the Brussels Bulls, is no longer eligible, to play due to age. Three players could have been lost in the OHA draft but were not selected. Chris Fischer, Steve Schwartzentruber and Deryk Hastie made the draft list. Brown also said some players will be trying out for some Junior B squads. "It's kind of premature to say at this point, but on paper we can ice a premium club. I think this is the best group we have ever started a season with." Brown added the veterans will Bill Brown be facing some stiff competition for positions this season, ' "We've got some Midgets that can play well and have heard from a few other guys who have Junior B tryouts that have ,expressed interest in playing in Wingham if that doesn't go well. It's going to be a very competitive camp. I'm looking forward to it and getting everybody back and working hard. We've got some talent and some tough decisions." He said he was also happy that assistant coach Pete Goodall will also be back on the bench with him. The team will take to the ice in Listowel on August 28 for training camp.
