Practice safe sun this hummer
More than 50,000. Canadians
develop skin cancer yearly and
although most cases are not life-
threatening, they are a significant
health problem because of the way
they destroy tissue, usually on the
face. A small percentage of these
cancers include melanoma of the
skin. By the end of 1993, more than
550 Canadians will die of this can-
cer which is almost always curable
if treated early.
It has been predicted that one out
of seven people born today will
develop skin cancer sometime
during his/her lifetime. One severe
sunburn during childhood can
double a child's risk of developing
skin cancer later in life.
This year will be worse for sun-
burns than usual because the level
of ultraviolet radiation reaching the
earth's surface is up to 25 per cent
higher than in recent years. That
means a lot less ozone in the at-
mosphere above Canada right now.
The ozone layer is a thin layer of
gas surrounding the earth. It serves
as a sunscreen, blocking out most
of the sun's harmful ultraviolet
(UV) rays. As the amount of ozone
within the layer decreases, the sun's
UV rays reaching the earth
increase. United Nations projections
are that a five per cent loss of
ozone will mean a 13 per cent
increase in the number of skin
cancers each year. UV rays are
invisible. However, their effects can
be seen in sunburns, premature
aging of the skin, and can
contribute to skin cancer and
cataracts of. the eye. The more UV
we are exposed to, the greater the
risk of developing these problems.
So, take some advice from the
Canadian Cancer Society this sum-
mer. wear a shirt and hat and
liberally apply sunscreen when you
are outdoors. In fact, the regular use
of sunscreens in the first 18 years
of life could reduce the lifetime
incidence of skin cancer by 78 per
cent. It is important to protect your
skin and see your doctor about any
suspicious sores. soots or moles
