The Grads had ad uncanny cohesion and coach Page ran a tight ship, establishing a. "farm system" which gradually moved players from high school- basketball positions on to the Gradettes, and finally the Grads. Page insisted on the importance of physical conditioning -- two practices weekly during the season, and no drinking or smoking. "You must play basketball, think basket- ball and dream basketball," he told his players, and they rewarded him with complete loyalty, and dazzling shooting skills. The Grads drew big crowds wherever they played, and over the years they travelled more than 200,000 km, attending four Olym- pic -related competitions in Paris, Amsterdam, Los Angeles and Ber- lin. The team financed itself from gate proceeds, but the players never received a penny. Their only motivation was a love of basketball. "We were a team," she said.
