awarded to its first -- and only
winner.
The Grads had ad uncanny
cohesion and coach Page ran a tight
ship, establishing a. "farm system"
which gradually moved players
from high school- basketball
positions on to the Gradettes, and
finally the Grads.
Page insisted on the importance
of physical conditioning -- two
practices weekly during the season,
and no drinking or smoking. "You
must play basketball, think basket-
ball and dream basketball," he told
his players, and they rewarded him
with complete loyalty, and dazzling
shooting skills.
The Grads drew big crowds
wherever they played, and over the
years they travelled more than
200,000 km, attending four Olym-
pic -related competitions in Paris,
Amsterdam, Los Angeles and Ber-
lin.
Unfortunately for Canaria, basket-
ball did not become a sanctioned
event until .1976: In their exhibition

matches at the 1924, 1928, 1932
and 1936 Olympic Games, the
Grads never lost a match and they
out -scored their opponents a
remarkable 1,863 points to 297.
The team financed itself from
gate proceeds, but the players never
received a penny. Their only
motivation was a love of basketball.
When one -of many Grad legends,
Noel MacDonald, was inducted into
the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame
in 1971, she admitted that she was
"not altogether comfortable" at
being singled out. "We were a
team," she said. "We were closer
than sisters." - -
When its playing facility was
appropriated by the Royal Canadian
Air Force as part of- the war effort
in 1940, the Edmonton Grads dis-
banded — every one of them a
winner.
James Naismith, the creator of the
game, was a long-time fan of the
Grads. He called them, quite simply
"the finest basketball team that ever
stepped out on a floor."

138 entries in the parade that took
four hours to pass any given point.
The band, comprised of members
from. Huron, Bruce, Perth, Grey and

a third prize for a, marching unit.
They were under the direction of
Pipe Major John Wise of 'Clinton.

sary blindness, said Mr. Chisholm.
