Million dollar
bridge opened
at Port Albert
The new bridge over the Nine
Mile River at Port Albert was of-
ficially opened last Friday. It is'
located about 100 metres
downstream from the old bridge,
which is being left open as a
pedestrian walkway.
The century -old bridge was the
centre of a dispute sinceen-
gineering studies indicated that it
was deteriorating rapidly. A 1974
partial analysis indicated that
vehicles weighing seven tonnes or
less could use the bridge. A later
updated study indicated that that
had slipped to two tonnes. Tem-
porary repairs brought the .load limit
back up to seven tonnes:. Much
debate took place over what long-
term plans should be made for the
bridge.
The new bridge. joined the exis-
ting Sydenham Street and intersects,
Melbourne Street.
The project was. estimated at
about $1.3 million, and came in at
$1.257 million, said Kevin Cook,

Mediation meeting set
to discuss Donegan matter
Kinloss Township -- The Ontario
Municipal Board (OMB) has in-
formed Kinloss Township council
that a mediation meeting; to discuss
the Donegan matter, will be held at
the council chambers on Aug. 4.
Clerk Mark Becker said the OMB
apparently hopes to resolve the,
matter before it goes any further.
Donegan's Haulage applied itt late'
1991 for a rezoning of 15 hectares
located at Lot 16, Concession 5,
from Agriculture 1 to M2 Extrac-
tive Industrial to allow for a gravel
pit. The application met vVith con;
siderable• opposition from area
landowners. Council voted no to the
proposed rezoning and Donegans
subsequently appealed to the OMB.
The involved parties have been.'
waiting . for a hearing date since
January 1992.
Mr. Becker said the meeting will
be closed to. the general public and
the press.
Amendments to the comprehen-
sive zoning bylaw were passed in
connection with the Bonnett and
Snobelen properties.
Pegg Construction's quote was
accepted to strap, insulate and clad
three walls, close off one set of
windows, and install three new
windows at the Kinloss Municipal
building, at a cost of $12,833, along
with the option of spray foam in-
sulation at an extra cost of $1,275.

for supplementary funding for a

The weather was just as hot. 50
years ago, July 10, when Ethel
MacKenzie . and Robert McAllister
were wed at the St. Andrew's
United Church, Port Albert, by Rev.
.H.J.' Vickerson. The bridal patty
included Mrs. McAllister's sister,
Marjorie MacKenzie, and Mr.
McAllister's cousin,. John Park of
Dungannon.
The young school teacher from
Port. Albert and the .West
Wawanosh farmer met when she
started teaching at )Vest Wawanosh
No. 3 in 1938.
"With neither much gas nor tires,"
said Mr. McAllister, "you didn't go
very far in those days." However,
they did manage a honeymoon trip
to Ottawa via bus and train. They
got a royal send off in Goderich, as
they boarded the bus for Stratford,
where they would catch the train.
Some prankster filled the back of
Bob's shirt with confetti. It took a
few minutes to figure 'out why
people were staring at him as he
walked down the streets of Strat-
ford. The hot weather, causing him
to perspire, had turned the back of
his shirt into a multitude of dif-
ferent colors. Mrs. McAllister
recalled that "the white silk
broadcloth shirt was worn out
before the colors ever faded. He
could only wear the shirt with"a suit.
from that day on."
The young couple took up far-
ming on the McAllister homestead
which has been in the family since
1854., Mr. .McAllister said his
grandfather, his father and himself
were born in the family home.
Mr. McAllister served two years
during World War IIand was dis-
charged when he contacted
pneumonia, In addition to farming,
he worked for G & E in Lucknow,
and just. recently retired from his
position as landfill site attendant in
West Wawanosh.
Mrs. McAllister returned to
teaching in 1947 and retired in
1950, after which she did some
supply work.
They fondly recall a tradition that
was started in their area in 1955
when six' couples met to bring in
the New Year. Mrs. McAllister said
the same couplds, with a few new
additions, met every year thereafter
for New Year's Eve, and any other
occasion that needed celebrating,
until 1986 when the circle was
broken by the death of one of their
good friends. Many memories are
stored away and, when brought out,
bring smiles and laughs to their
faces.
Mrs. McAllister keeps herself
active with- her involvement in the
WMS at Knox Presbyterian
Goderich, and just recently
completed the history of schools in
the township for the West
Wawanosh History Book. Mr.
McAllister is an avid reader.
They are the proud parents of
Mary Lou Baynard (Doug) and Bob
McAllister (Beth),•and grandparents
to three granddaughters and .two
grandsons. •
And what is their recipe for 50
years of wedded bliss? Mr. McAl-
lister quickly replies, "If we got
into an argument during the
daytime, we settled it before we
went to bedl" Mrs. McAllister
added, "You must be willing to
give and take."
A come and go tea was held at
the Raynard home in Lucknow.

sary on July 10. • Relatives and friends offered their
congratulations during a come and go tea at the Raynard home
