Eagles capture soccer trophy
p y
On June I2,. in Clinton, six
mosquito division teams met to
compete for the coveted Legion
trophy. When it was all done, the
Lucknow team, sponsored by Luck -
now Legion Branch 309, emerged
"A" champions.
It was a very close contest bet-
ween some of the best soccer teams
in the area.
In• the first game, Lucknow took a
3 - 1 lead against St. Colum-
bus/Seaforth squad, only to have
them come back and tie it 3 - 3.
Goal scorers for Lucknow were
Daryl Aitchison with two and Ean
Moffat with. one.
After a further 10 minutes of
overtime it was still tied. This led
to a five -player shoot-out. Lucknow
finally prevailed, scoring four goals
to the opponents two. Goals were
by Aitchison, Josh Leeman, Taylor
Mali and Jonathan MacKinnon.
Some great stops were made by
goalie Taylor Mali.
This win advanced the team into
the "A" side.
Lucknow vs Goderich
The second game was against a
very strong Goderich team. After
regulation time it was a scoreless
tie. Overtime still remained
scoreless. This led to another shoot-
out. It took three sets of five -player
shoot-outs before Lucknow emerged
victorious.
Lucknow vs Blyth
After losing the toss, Lucknow
had to meet Blyth immediately. A
win would clinch the championship.
Early in the game the tired Luck -
now team got behind 2 to 0. Deter-
mined to overcome this deficit, the
team battled back to end the game
with a3-2win
.
Scoring for Lucknow were David
Payne off a corner kick by Craig
Moffat, and two by striker Daryl
Aitchison. The defence of Josh
Leeman, Sean Lougheed, Criag
Moffat, Jonathan MacKinnon, Ean
Moffat and goalkeeper Taylor Mali
have to be given .praise for their
outstanding play. They do not get a
chance to score often, but really
deserve much of the credit for
shutting down the opposition in all
the games.
Soccer is truly a team sport, and
it took all members of the team
doing their part' to succeed in the
victorious event.
Special thanks to the Lucknow
Legion for sponsoring the team
every year.
The beautiful trophy will be on
dis t la at the Le • ion.
