HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1993-06-30, Page 6Page 6 — Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, June 30, 1993 Peggs hold grand opening by Pat Livingston Theme past 16 years have been a time of expansion for Pegg Construction, of Lucknow, and it culminated on the weekend with the grand opening of a new 4,500 sq. foot showroom •and warehouse on Campbell Street east. Some may question why, in these economic times, a business would expand in such a way. Tom said prices were down when he started the construction, and because of those tight economic times, the renovation market was quite good, while the new construction end of business had dropped off somewhat. He believes it was a wise business decision. Tom also said he liked the fact his location on the main street was "more visible. I definitely have more people stopping in than I did at my other location." Originally located in St. Helen's, where he resided then, Tom had one other man, Bill MacPherson, working for him. He eventually expanded to have one three-man crew, and when he moved his location to Lucknow's Inglis Street in '1990, was employing five men. He currently employs nine local men. Steve MacPherson and Mur- ray Adams have around 13 years association with Tom. He said the rest of the men, Dan Londry, Wayne Phillips, Bob Cranston, Kirk Livingston and Clint Murray have been with him for various periods of time, and added that they all get along well together, an important aspect of. any business. Employee turnover has been very low. Due to dedicated employees and the abilities of his two foreman, Steve and Murray, Tom's time has been freed up for other business details. He is kept busy pricing. jobs, giving estimate§ and billing. He does admit he misses the hands- on part of his business, particularly • during the type of weather we were receiving last week. Tom's wife, Pauline, in addition to her full time employment at Wingham Hospital, is kept busy looking after the company books, which Tom refers to as a "full- time" job in itself, thanks to government requirements. Pauline plays a vital role in the business, as Tom has no patience for this type of paper work. Another family member, Tom's step -daughter, Denise Donald, handles the payroll. The new facility offers a retail outlet to do-it-yourself renovators, or other contractors, who can choose from a wide variety of siding, windows, doors, shutters, eavestroughing and some roofing' products. Steel tile roofing is also available. A relatively new product on the market, Tom said he is "very satisfied" with it. The PVC -coated roofing comes with a 50 -year war- ranty andis available in a wide range of colors. In addition to warehouse management, Bill MacPherson will be handling the retail sales in the 20 x 50 ft. showroom/office. An added feature for customers is the convenience of choosing the proper colour of siding, soffit and facia, and roofing by way of a portable type display. It is set up so that various colors may be mixed and matched to check out colour coor- dination, or a portable piece of siding can be taken home for the same reason. Another new product for Pegg Construction is North Star Florida rooms and all -season sunrooms. These add-ons are constructed in London, Ontario. Tom points out that the greater percentage of the products he uses for his own business, or will retail, are Canadian made. Pegg Construction and Building Centre is located at the east end of Lucknow, Phone 528-3720. Tom and Pauline Pegg (left) officially opened the new Pegg Construction and Building Centre, located at the east end of Lucknow, last Saturday. Special guests during the day were Tom's parents, Audrey and Vincent Pegg, of Millgrove, who dropped by to say "Congratulations, son!" (Pat Livingston photo) SAVE ENERGY AND SAVE MONEY! A group of "line dancers" from Lucknow participated in attempting to break the world record for the number of dancers at Collingwood on Sunday. Their was a long line but still not enough as the record is 30,000 dancers. But a good try anyhow in trying to get Col- lingwood on the map with five or six thousand dancers.
