Council agreed to replace the 1977 grader with a 1989 Champion 740A, providing the warranty is extended to 300 hours and that Champion pay the round-trip freight costs. The cost of the new grader is $87,654.18. Board 'from page 1 county senior staff that a five per cent, across-the-board, pay cut for all employees would have been easier to implement and less of a threat to services. While the board waits to find out what the social contract legislation will mean, it is still calculating how to absorb the cost of the expen- diture control plan announced last month. Mr. Mackay said a "worst case scenario" . will cost $200,000 this year, and $494,000 next year because of lost grants for part-time students. Tax on insurance and benefits for employees will cost $50,000 for this year, and $100,000' in 1994. "That's right off the taxpayers' money." Mr. Mackay said cuts in computer and restructuring grants won't hit the Bruce board as hard because the full amount the province promised has not been pencilled into this year's budget. Earlier this month Mr. Mackay was hoping the social contract would reduce the board's cost to match reductions in provincial grant. But he isn't happy with the legislation that was handed down. "I couldn't even comment on how we'd (cut payroll) without the government mandating roll backs," he said. Mr. Mackay predicted negotiating the $2.8 million savings in salary costs will be "tough" considering teachers have refused contracts offering a .5 per cent pay increase. UCKNOW Many county employees are under $30,000 range •from page 1 the goal depends • on how willing employees are to accept other op- tions. Mr. Jamieson said the county faces another complication because more than half of its 400 full and part-time employees are in the under $30,000 salary range that the province promised to .exempt from wage concessions. "We don't know if we can do anything that would be within the province's' framework," Jamieson said, adding an across-the-board five per cent pay cut for all employees would have been "far easier" to manage. Council dis- cussed the social contract announ- cement behind closed doors for over two hours Tuesday, but emerged with no concrete plans on how to implement the province's aemanas. "The problem is it's so am- biguous," Mr. Ferris said. "I guess it will have to be done, but the thing we're facing is what kind of cooperation we'll get from the employees and their , bargaining agents." Even before Tuesday's announcement the country was struggling to cope with a $147,000 cut in its unconditional grants. Finance director Bettyanne Bray said the new cuts mean all the budgets will have to be opened up and • .re-examined; . To set an example, councillors announced a five per cent cut • in their own per diem of $110 for • a full day meeting. That move will save $170.50 each time council meets for a regular monthly session, plus the savings of five per cent for each per diem at committee meetings. Four hundred are printed groin page 1 . But earlier this year, he finished the text, assisted a great deal by his mother Marjorie. They found a printer at Hanover willing to take on the project. The book now has been printed and is awaiting binding. Publishing a book is a lot , of work, but it also is a lot of money, as the Walls have found out. David estimates it will cost over $11,000 to have 400 copies of the book published, much of which ishis own money. However, orders have been brisk and he hopes to sell many more copies at this summer's reunion. His, eery wish is that he can get his looney back out of the project.
