Making quality hay
. The time is here when most of
you will le heading to the field
with the haybine or swather. A little
advance planning will help you get
the most out of your hay crop.
Obviously, the weather has a
large influence on the type of hay
we put in the barn or silo, and we •
cannot control the weather. The best
_..„__,„we can do is to follow the weather
forecasts,- and try try -to -Yin as a high
pressure system is moving inl
Where we can make a difference,
though, is to minimize the time
—between -cutting -and -getting -the-hay--
undercover.
The place to start is with the
cutting operation. Proper con-
ditioning will cut half a day off of
drying time, so make sure that your .
conditioner is set properly. The
rolls must be aggressive enough to
rupture the sterns, which_ take
longest to dry, but gentle enough to
keep the leaves on the stem. Laying
the hay out flat will also speed
drying, even though it will mean an
extra trip over the field with a rake.
Your choice of storage system
will also affect how easy it is to
produce quality feed:. Haylage or
round bale silage ("baleage") should
be harvested at about 40 per cent to
50 per cent moisture, instead of
waiting until it. has dried to 20 per
cent moisture (maximum) for dry
hay. This not only saves time, but
will retain many more of the leaves.
The key to success with this system
is to exclude air from the hay as
quickly and completely as possible,
so that the ensiling process can
start. It is much easier to produce
silage from forage which has not
been rained on, because the
population of bacteria on the hay is
