Update on proposed amalgamation
Proceedings have been underway
since 1992 to amalgamate the Vil-
lage of Ripley and Huron
Township. Both councils met in the
spring of 1991 and were in
agreement to go ahead with the
joining of the two municipalities.
Early in 1992, a submission was
made to the Bruce County Restruc-
turing Committee by the village and
the township, stating the reasons
why the two municipalities should
amalgamate including fire protec-
tion, library, medical centre,
sanitary disposal, joint parks and
recreation facilities.
A bylaw was passed in February
1992 requesting the Minister of
Municipal Affairs to initiate
procedures to amalgamate the vil-
lage of Ripley and Township of
Huron under the Municipal Boun-
dary Negotiations Act.
In February and March 1993, the
ministry set up a meeting to review
the overall objectives of the two
municipalities. In May, the first
meeting of the amalgamation com-
mittee was held with the assistance
of the Municipal Boundaries Branch
to set up a work plan with topics
for discussion for the next several
months.
It was decided the committee
would conduct news releases to
newspapers and the Cable TV in
advance of each monthly public
meeting, plan meetings with special
interest groups upon request and
hold public meetings the second
Thursday of each month.
