at 137th anniversary
of South Kinloss church
South Kinloss church celebrated
their 137th anniversary service on
Sunday. The guest speaker was
Rev. John Congram of Toronto who
is also editor of the Presbyterian
Record.
Special music in the morning,
besides the senior choir, was the
junior choir and the trio of Rena
Forster, Shirley Colwell and
Marilynne Gilchrist.
In the evening we had the
pleasure of listening to Wanda and
Murray Keith of Goderich, formerly
of South Kinloss. The organist was
Margaret Hamilton at both services
and Wilma Clarke was pianist in
the morning with Dale Gilchrist for
the evening service.
Ira and Elizabeth Dickie visited
Thursday night with Denver and
Brenda Dickie and family at Sutton.
On Friday they were at the open
house for Cabor Mor Holdings Ltd.,
a new manufacturing company

and two partners.
On Wednesday, Mary Lavis,
Olive Needham and Elizabeth Dick-
ie from South Kinloss were at the
100th Anniversary of the WMS at
Kinlough Presbyterian Church.
,Phyllis Wallace of London visited
on Sunday with her sister, Ruth and
Don Bell . and her mother, Mrs.
Steer at Pinecrest in Lucknow.
On Saturday, Ira and Elizabeth
Dickie attended a reunion of
students and teachers of S.S,#10
Eastnor (Edenhurst). Ira started to
school there and Elizabeth's sister,
Frances, the late Mrs. David
Brough, was the second teacher
after the new school was built in
1924.

Hugh Sinnamon is going west
.Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Simpson
visited last week with Mr. and Mrs.
Mark Sahli and family of Windsor.
Hugh Sinnamon was presented
with a gift from the choir on Sun-
day evening. Gertrude Durnin and
Agnes Farrier, and the combined
congregations by Clifford Laidlaw
made the presentation following the
evening service at the United
Church. Hugh is moving to the. west
and will be greatly missed.
Gertrude Durnin attended the
baptism of her great grandson
Mathew Thomas Allan, at the St.
Anne's Anglican Church in
Bryanston, on Sunday.
Karen Elliott commenced work at
the Mutual Group in Waterloo on
Monday.
UCW
The Whitechurch UCW met June
2 for a pot luck lunch at the home
of Margaret Sleightholm with 11 in
attendance.
The topic was christian develop-
ment and leadership with Janet
Cook, Gertrude Durnin and Evelyn
Gibb as leaders.

The scripture was taken from
Acts 9: 36-43. Mrs. Cook told
about the early churches and fust
women, and then conducted a
contest on Huron County's villages
and towns.
Rollcall was answered with a
rhyme to go with 1993.
The next meeting is Sept. 1 at the
home of Mrs. Elwood Groskorth in
Goderich.

Evelyn Gibb Was hostess for the
Whitechurch WI meeting on June 9
at the hall. Jean Ross was convener
for the public relations meeting.
President Marjorie Wall opened in
the usual way.
Helen Currie reported on the
district annual in Kincardine and on
the cancer canvass.

was part of the meeting.
Mrs. Ross showed a film called
Celtic Spirit with music and scenery
from Ireland and Scotland.
The lunch committee of Agnes
Farrier, Jan McGuire and Pearl
Shiell servedrefreshments.
The next meeting is • in August.
Anyone who is .going on the
Whitechurch bus trip is reminded of
the date, on July 8. The money of
$39 must be paid to Jean Ross or
Jean Tiffin by June. 30.

Pharis G. Mathers
1903 1993
Pharis Graham 'Mathers, of R.R:
1, Lucknow, died at the Wingham
and District Hospital, on June 6,
1993, in his 90th year.
Mr. Mathers farmed all of his life
at Concessions 1 and 2, Kinloss
township.. His greatest love was
working in his prized woodlot and
enjoying the grandeur of the mas-
sive trees growing there.
He was firmly committed to
preservation of the historical resour-
ces of the Grey -Bruce area. During
his many years as a member of the
Bruce County Historical' Society; he
served as president and treasurer of
the New Horizons Project under-
taken
by the Bruce County Ar-
chives Group. -
Mr. Mathers was also a long time
member '.of the Ontario
Genealogical Society through which
he assisted many people to trace
their ancestors.
He experienced many changes in
society throughout his long lifetime.
He embraced',them all but he grew
up in 'a pioneering age where you
had to be self sufficient. Thus he
had learned "how to fix anything."
He used this ability to repair many
appliances and pieces of equipment
for friends and family thus saving
them considerable expense,
Mr. Mathers was life long mem-
ber of Lucknow United Church and
was an active and enthusiastic par-
ticipant in many local senior
citizens, • horticultural and
recreational activities.
He will be ` missed by all who
knew him..
Born in Lucknow on Nov. 7,
1903, Pharis Mathers was a son of
the late Henry and Marg (Ga-
llagher) Mathers.
He is survived by his daughter,
Carolyn and her husband Wayne
Pepper of Regina, Saskatchewan,
and a , dear friend Vera Schmidt,
and two grandchildren Stephen and
Jeanette Pepper of Regina.
Mr. Mathers was predeceased by
4. his wife Maizie Hackett in 1973.

in Ashfield. United Church.
He was also predeceased by a
sister Elleda Wightman in '1992.
Visitation was at the MacKenzie
and McCreath Funeral Home, Luck -
now, where the funeral was held on
June 8, at 2 p.m. with Rev,. W.
Henderson, a long time friend,
officiating.
Flower bearers were Gordon
Morrison and Bill Collins.
Honorary pallbearers . were Mel
Hackett, Cliff Hackett, Mel Mor-
rison, Alfred Patterson (unable to
act) and Lloyd Schmidt.
Active pallbearers were Norman
Wightman, Harvey Wightman, John
Hildebrand, Elvin Wightman, Bill
DeBoer and Lloyd Morrison.
Interment South Kinloss
Cemetery.
