Huron County will join the 32
District Health Councils to par-
ticipate as an equal partner in
regional` planning decisions for
health care delivery. The Huron
County District Health Council
Steering committee reached a strong
consensus for this action at its
meeting of June 9.
It was felt that there is no alter-
native if Huron health care con-
sumers are going to have their
needs and interests protected in a
time of reducing resources, and, if
the local communities are going to
play a meaningful role in health
care decision-making through ad-
vice offered directly to the Minister
of Health. Widespread support. for
this action was noted throughout the
Huron health care and consumer
community who participated in the
public information and hearings
process conducted over the last
three months.
In confirmation of their consen-
sus, committee members voted to
support the establishment of some
sort of health council, recognizing

the . need to commence an im-
" mediate study to address boundary,
structural and governance con-'
siderations. There were no negative
votes. Eighteen (including the
Chair) of the 19 committee mem-
bers were present.
At its next meeting, June 23, the
committee will begin to consider a
number of boundary issues. Con-
sideration will be given to the op-
tion of joining with Perth County in
a joint Huron -Perth DHCrve"Rture.
The large majority of respondents
to Steering Committee hearings and
surveys indicated that the best route
for Huron to meet Ministry of
Health minimum population re-
quirements for a DHC is to join
with Perth County. Subcommittees
of the two DHC Steering Commit-
tees have been established to
examine some of the common
boundary issues together. The
Steering Committee members will
also review tie merits of joining
with existing DHCs in the area
(Grey -Bruce, Thames Valley, or
Lambton DHCs).

9:30 at the hall.
Elaine Errington gave a repon'on
the district annual meeting held in
Wingham.
A social time followed with lunch
served by Norma Raynard.
A number of proponents of the
Huron -Perth combination suggest
that Huron and Perth would be
more equal partners because they
would both be starting fresh and
they are similar geographic areas. A
number of joint ventures are already
in place for existing health care
initiatives. This may make the
extension to joint regional planning
in health care a logical next step.
The Perth County DHC Steering
Committee has not yet reached the
point of making a decision about
whether to form a DHC. Last
week's decision will be com-
municated to the Minister of Health,
the Honorable Ruth Grier. The
process of establishing guidelines
for structure, governance and mem-
bership will take several more
months. Some committee members
have indicated a need to examine a
number of structural and planning
issues before final decisions can be
made and the committee completes
its mandate.
