HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1993-06-16, Page 6Page 6 - Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, June 16, 1993 Finlay Decorators, marks four decades -.in business by Pat Livingston Finlay Decorators marked its 40th anniversary as a Lucknow business last week. The long time residents of Luck - now will remember that this business . was centered around wallpaper, paint and a gift shop when Robert and Margaret Finlay purchased it in June 1953. Over the years many changes took place. In 1962 the gift line was discontinued and in 1968 carpets and draperies were added to the business. An expansion to the flooring section took place in 1970 when they purchased the floor covering stock of MacKenzie Fur- niture of Lucknow. In those early years the business was housed in the Finlay property just west of the present showroom. The property where the business sits today was purchased in 1966 and subsequently became the warehouse for floor coverings. The old structure was demolished in June of 1977 when the new showroom and warehouse was constructed. In the spring of 1983 the building was remodelled to include the retail store with the entire business operating under one roof. Marg clearly remembers the hustle and bustle that took place with the remodelling being completed just in time for the Jam- boree '83• homecoming festivities. In 1987, the Finlays' son Paul became an integral part of the business when they learned of Bob's failing health. 'Bob passed away in March of 1988. Finlay Decorators continues on in the family tradition with Paul and Marg running the business, and Paul's wife Joan, who refers to herself as the part-time help, assis- ting on a regular basis. As the anniversary sale progressed last week Marg reminisced, recalling the days when "the children (Sandra and Paul) were raised in the store." . Being good little kiddies, she said they never touched the china or gift wear! In those early days, Marg said, "You could buy ceiling paper. for .29 a single roll - of course it wasn't • pre -pasted." And if you were looking for wallpaper (now called wallcovering) you. could choose from one book of Sunwor- thy patterns and Finlay's stocked it all. That would be impossible today,' said Marg, when you con- sider thenumber, of books and patterns available for the home decorator. Paint choices were not as varied as they are today because they were pre -mixed. Finlay Decorators has added , many products over the years, but one area they have never changed is their paint brand. They have been a C -I -L dealer for 4"0• years. Paul recalls as youngster he was particularly happy to see 'one C -I -L salesman come calling. He was a great sketcher and Paul still remem- bers how he used to draw pictures for him. • Many changes take" place in product aualitv over 'a 40 -year span. Paul , zeroes in on the recent introduction of the C-IrL solvent free paints that are promoted as "eliminating "air -polluting, petroleum-based solvents • once considered essential for superior paint performance." Marg talked about the major improvements in carpet quality, and the stain resistant factors implemented during the „last 20 years. • Although changes are bound to come in business, particularly one that has been around for four decades, one thing has never changed at Finlay Decorators. It was and is a family business that continues to provide quality service and advice to its valued clientele. With the. closing of Lucknow's post office, Finlay Decorator* became one of the village's retail outlets in 4991. • Who knows what the next 40 years will. bring. Perhaps a third generation in the business with some reporter interviewing Bobby or Gary Finlay (Paul and Joan's children) on the 80th anniversary. Finlay Decorators marked Its 40th year In business last week. Paul and Marg are shown accepting a plaque from Don Ross', C -I -L outux sates representat ve, 40 years as a C -1-L dealer.
