no dollars for, RNA school
by Cameron Wood
It's final,
Funding from the Ministry of
Health will not be forthcoming for
the Registered Nursing Assistants
School in Wingham.
Wingham and District Hospital
administrator Lloyd Koch made the
announcement Friday, June 4.
While the school in slated to close
at the end of this academic year,
Koch said the hospital board is still
looking at alternative methods of
funding.
"You will recall that on May 16
all six hospitals affected by this
decision met with the Ministry of
Health representatives in Toronto
and presented a strong case to have
funding continued for one more
year to allow us time to secure
other sources of funding. We were
optimistic about getting our request
approved since: the people at the
meeting dere supportive," he said.
"However, when the Minister of
Health, Ruth Grier, reviewed the
case she rejected it. We now have
to recognize that we have exhausted
our 'appeal.
"We have been in discussion
with other sources of funding,
including the Canada Employment
Centre, to see if we can operate an
RNA training' program for them on
a contract basis this fall. We do not
know if this will be successful."
The reasons behind the rejection
by the health minister were not
disclosed • to the board, but Koch
said the provincial• government may
be in a difficult situation with the
social contract talks to reduce spen-
ding, and then turn around and
provide the school with $120,000.
Four of the six Ontario RNA
schools will be closed. The two.
which will continue to receive
funding are Fort Frances and
Kcnora in Northern Ontario. Koch
said the feeling is these two centres
are so geographically removed from
access to another community col-
lege is difficult. Interested RAN
students in this region will now
have to travel to Fanshawe College,
London, or Kitchener's Conestoga
College.
Two of the three local school's
employees will be moved to respon-
sibilities in the hospital. Marilyn
Irwin announced she will be leaving
the hospital, regardless of the out-
come of funding, on June 25.
"This is a very important
program for us, but we're just not
able to fund the whole thing. We
will be in discussion with the col-
lege programs to discuss setting up
a satellite programhere," said
Koch.
The six RNA programs are ,only
a small part.. of the total training
available in the health field, they
are the only programs funded by
the Ministry of Health.,
• "I have no reason to believe the
Ministry of Health is going to
reconsider this. program. If we are
going to be successful in the future
of getting it restarted, it will be on
the basis of another source of fun-
ding."
Irwin said she felt strongly about
the need for a local program. The
students have traditionally included
mature women, who may be
seeking off -farm employment, or
for family commitments simply
cannot travel to centres like London
or Kitchener. •
She, said she's disappointed for
the applicants for the 1993/94 year.
Approximately 40 applicants had
already been interviewed for the
school year, and a number of ap-
plications have been received.

about Depressive and Manic
Depressive illness will have an
opportunity to do so on June 17.
Dianne Prato, regional co-ordinator
of South -Western Ontario for the
Depressive/Manic Depressive As-
sociation of Ontario (DMDAO) will
speak at Clinton's OMAF Board
Room at 7:30 p.m.
Ms. Prato will talk about this
illness that affects one in 100
people, what some of the causes are
and how episodes can be handled
and prevented.
Anyone with questions about this.
illness, including those diagnosed
with ,it, family, friends and others
are invited to attend and learn
where they can get more infor-
mation and help. The possibility of
starting a support group will be
discussed as web.
Depressive and manic depressive
illness is one that sends those
inflicted on emotional roller coaster
rides. People with this illness have
very good, even great, days full of
energy, achievement and ideas and
'really low, low days where in-
dividuals barely have the energy
and incentive to lift their heads off
the pillow. Some of the world's
most creative artists, , writers,
politicians and public figures of this
century and others had the illness.
It is one that can be coped with and •
controlled.
Anyone planning to attend is
asked to Call the Canadian Mental
Health Association (Huron) at 482-
9311 to ensure an accurate dough-
nut and coffee count.
