Stevers enjoy retirement on their Little Ponderosa
by.Pat Livingston
It's 19 years. since Earl and Kay
Stever decided to semi -retire in
Kinloss Township.
As their 50th. wedding anniversary
approached last week, both sat back
and relaxed on the front porch of
their 108 year old stone home. The
birds sang brightly, and the warm
winds rustled the magnificent trees
as they talked about the move to
Kinloss. It was the character of the
home that brought them here and it
is evident they cherish the 100
acres they refer to as "Stevers Little
Ponderosa."
Earl and Kay were married on
June 12, 1943 in Linwood. A
licensed mechanic, . Earl sold his
garage business in Heidelberg when
they moved here to get away from
the "rat race."
During 50 years of marriage, a
couple is sure to notice a lot of
changes. For the Stevers the price
of, property is one. In 1947 they
purchased their first piece of
property, which included 50 acres,
a house and a barn for $3,000. In
their early years of marriage Earl
was making 170/hour and Kay
111/2e/hour. My how times have
changedl
Earl is a dedicated Lions Club
member with over 20 years service,
and 40 years service to the Indepen-
dent Order of •Oddfellows. For.
many years he acted as the treasurer
for the Lucknow Lions, but failing
health made him decide to retire
from that position. He was one of
the members instrumental in getting
the bingo started in Lucknow, and
continues to take an active interest
in that fundraiser.
Kay said she was involved in so
many things in Heidelberg that
when they moved she was glad to
take it easy. She does however
support the Lions Ladies in their
endeavors.
