Farm family advisor shares confidences
Many of us would agree that the
'agricultural community has seen
more than its share of financial set-
backs in the last decade. But in
certain parts of the province, this
past season has dealt a serious
economic blow.
For producers in financial stress,
OMAF provides, upon request, the
service of a Farm Family Advisor.
An advisor is a fellow farmer, from
a distance to assure confidentiality,
who is capable of all the necessary
financial paper work of production
forecasts, monthly cash flows,
asset -liability statements and debt
service calculations. An advisor, if
requested by the farmer, can attend
meetings with creditors and sup-
pliers and help work towards
solutions. The advisor's job is to
understand a farm business, outline
possible options, and recommend
the best apparent course of action.
The strength of •an advisor is
his/her role as a peer counsellor,
that is, from the same background
and type of farm operation. Con-
fidentiality is always maintained.
When it comes to options and
solutions, there is.no new magic. It
all settles down to variations of
refinancing, partial asset liquidation
or down -sizing, pursuit of additional
off -farm income,., or the complete
1992 NISA
Program
Applications for the 1992
NISA Program are currently
being completed as the July 31
deadline. approaches. Questions
arise concerning how much
money do I spend, what forms •
do I need; what numbers go
where, etc. The end result needs
to be understanding of how
the program works and a proper-
ly completed application.
With this in mind, a workshop
is planned. for Wed., June 23, at
7:30 p.m. in the seminar room of
the Ontario Ministry of Agricul-
ture and Food office in Clinton.
Preregistration is required by
contacting the office at 482-3428
or 1-800-265-5170 by Fri., June
18.
The purpose of the workshop
will be to give an overview of
the forms required, to look at
key areas on the forms, to dis-
cuss the purpose of the program
and to answer questions.
A NISA account can be used
' for several purposes. As a
"safety net", it allows'
withdrawals when the farm's
gross margin falls below average
or when the individual or farm
family's 'taxable income falls
below $10,000 or $20,000
respectively.om
or se er
NISA will be used as another
retirement savings vehicle. If
you are completing your own
application or wish to gain a
better understanding of the
program, register today for the
NISA workshop on Julie 23.

FARM REPORT
Bruce County,, OMAF
Al
liquidation of a farm business in as
orderly a manner as possible.
It will probably be the first time
the farm family has had to face
these choices, and this is where the
advisor can be•especially helpful.
Most advisors have worked at their
roles for several years, many have
also worked with Farm Debt
Review system, and all have seen
numerous situations involving these
options.
A further strength of the Farm
Advisor asa peer counsellor, is
his/her willingness to spend the
extra time,, often late at night
around the kitchen table, when the
talk turns from•'production numbers,
debt servicing and refinancing op-
tions, to the equally important is-
sues of emotional feelings, impact
on the family and status in the
community. All fellow farmers
share the same sense of time and
place. This is a common bond, that
perhaps a professional consultant,
creditor, banker or supplier doesn't
understand as well.
Anyone can access the Farm
Family Advisor Program by contac-
ting his/her local OMAF office or
by calling the Program Co-ordinator
at 1-800-265-4347.

Pesticide Container Recycling
This time of year, we see lots of
empty pesticide containers around
the countryside. In the past, these
would have gone to the landfill -
out of sight., out of mind, Today,
however, there is a better way!
You can bring your empty, triple-
rinsed metal or plastic pesticide
containers to collection depots this
spring, and again this fall. These
will be collected and inspected.
Metal containers will enter a regular
recycling program, while plastic
containers will be shredded and re-
molded into objects like parking lot
curbs or fence posts. Collection
sites in our area are Sprucedale
Agromart in Hanover and Lucknow
District Co -Op from June 21-25,
and Sprucedale Agromart in Tara
from June 28 -July 2. Call the
OMAF office for more details.
