Active living:
investing in
your life
A few years ago, a quote like the
one above would have conjured up
images ofsweaty bodies, expensive
designer gear and feats of Her-
culean strength. It was enough to
send most of us cowering back to
the couch, clutching our beloved
remote control and holding on for
dear life.
Fortunately, our appreciation of
physical activity has changed. "It's
not so inch that the rules have
changed,” says Mary Gingrich,
Physical Activity Promoter at the
Bruce -Grey -Owen Sound Health
Unit, "It's more like we've thrown
the rule book out! We've shifted
away from the 'no pain no gain'
approach to a more personal ap-
proach to physical activity."
Mrs. Gingrich notes that while we
can still admire the accomplish-
ments of elite athletes, we don't
have to get pangs of guilt. because
we don't get up with the -chickens -
to work out. "It . is up to each and
every . one of us to define what
physical activity means to us."
Gingrich explains that the concept
of "active living" encourages
Canadians to move a little more, a
little more often. People feel com-
fortable deciding for themselves-
how active they want to be and
what kinds of activities they like'
best. They make the decisions
based on their goals and daily
routines. "For some, that means
bitting the gym five time a week or
competing in the Ironman Triathlon.
But for others it's back to the
basics, walling the dog, cycling to
work or school. Simply enjoying
active times alone or with friends."
"From the time we start crawling,
'we receive health benefits ' from
every little bit of daily physical
activity, "says Mrs. Gingrich. While
early studies focused on vigorous.
exercise, recent research has found
that even people who are ,
moderately active will reap, the
health benefits. Leisure time activity
that uses as little as 500 extra
calories a week will contribute to
better health. Thi$ isn't much. A
daily- 15 minute walk will do it, so
will three 10 minute treks through
the day. That's the good news. The
bad news is that research suggests
that a lot of us still haven't caught
on. Only 22 per cent of Bruce -Grey
residents participate in ' daily
'physical activity according to the
Ontario Health Survey (1990). The
Campbell's Survey on Well -:Being
in Canada (1988) shows that only
one-third of Canadians are active
enough to enjoy the health benefits.
Most Canadians could prevent or
'reduce many health problems by
increasing their levels of physical
actijiity. .
Hre! s -haw -some. -Can
taking active living to heart:
Mary goes -for a visiting' walk
almost every day in thee neighbor-
hood she has lived for 55 years. As
the walk progresses, some of her.
neighbors join her. It's the best way
they have to keep. up with what is
,happening in their comfntinity.
Ali and Farrah learned how to
square dance when they first moved
to Canada. It's lots of active fun
and they have met many interesting
people.
Roger and his friends spend most
weekends together. In the winter
they ski --downhill and cross-
country. In the summer they camp,
canoe, water ski and . hike. They
never know what they will be doing
next --only that they'll be doing
something.
Active Living --try it and make an
investment for a lifetime. Chances
are, you'll even enjoy id
